The Royal Kennel Club calls the Pomeranian "the smallest spitz and a favourite of Queen Victoria". It says the breed was bred down from the German Spitz, was first seen in the UK in 1870, and became popular thanks to royal patronage, "its dainty appearance and extrovert character". The breed standard describes the temperament as "extrovert, lively and intelligent".
