What Dachshunds are like to live with
The Royal Kennel Club describes the Dachshund as a "German badger and rabbit hunter" that "comes in a variety of sizes and coat types". It says the breed is known in Germany as the Teckel (badger dog), and is still used there for tracking wounded game and going to ground after badgers or rabbits.

Breed descriptions are general. Every rescue animal is an individual, so the rescue's own assessment of the animal comes first.

How many rescue Dachshunds are available for adoption in Northern Ireland?
As of 8 November 2026, no Dachshunds are listed for adoption in Northern Ireland on LocalPetFinder. Rescues add animals all the time, so this page fills as they list them.
What is the difference between a Dachshund and a miniature Dachshund?
Size. The Royal Kennel Club recognises two sizes in the UK. The breed standards give an ideal weight of 9 to 12 kg for the standard size and 4.5 kg for a miniature, with a desired maximum of 5 kg. Both sizes come in smooth-haired, long-haired and wirehaired coats, and all six varieties share the same breed standard.
Do Dachshunds have back problems?
They can. Dogs Trust says Dachshunds are predisposed to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), similar to a slipped disc in humans, which can cause weakness, loss of balance and even paralysis. The Royal Kennel Club asks breeders to screen their dogs' spines under its IVDD screening scheme. Ask the rescue whether this dog has had any back problems, and see your vet promptly if you notice weakness or wobbliness.
How much does it cost to adopt a Dachshund in Northern Ireland?
Each rescue sets its own adoption fee, and Dogs Trust charges £287.50 for a puppy or adult dog in Northern Ireland (where you also need a dog licence). The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
Are there Dachshund puppies for sale in Northern Ireland?
No. We don't list animals for sale. Every Dachshund on this page is with a rescue or rehoming centre. Rescues rehome animals rather than selling them, usually for an adoption fee: for example, Dogs Trust £287.50 in Northern Ireland. The fee usually goes towards vet work already done, such as neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations. If you searched "dachshund puppies for sale Northern Ireland", the Dachshunds here are the rescue route: you apply to the rescue and pay its adoption fee, not a sale price.
Can I get a free Dachshund to a good home in Northern Ireland, or one under £500?
Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Many rescue fees are under £500: Dogs Trust charges £287.50 for a puppy or adult dog. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. In Northern Ireland all dogs must be microchipped at eight weeks old, so ask to see the microchip details (see nidirect).
Are there Dachshund puppies for adoption in Northern Ireland?
Not right now: no Dachshunds are listed in Northern Ireland today, so there are no puppies either. Puppies do get listed, and rescues can tell you much more about an adult's character, so check back.
