What Dachshunds are like to live with
The Royal Kennel Club describes the Dachshund as a "German badger and rabbit hunter" that "comes in a variety of sizes and coat types". It says the breed is known in Germany as the Teckel (badger dog), and is still used there for tracking wounded game and going to ground after badgers or rabbits.
That is the breed in general. A rescue Dachshund is an individual, and many are crosses. The rescue knows how this dog behaves at home, on the lead and with visitors, so ask them.
Size and exercise
The Royal Kennel Club lists both the standard and miniature smooth-haired Dachshund as needing up to an hour of exercise a day. It says a small house with a small or medium garden is enough, in town or country.
Grooming
The smooth-haired Dachshund has a short coat that sheds and needs grooming about once a week. Long-haired and wirehaired Dachshunds have different coats, so ask the rescue what this dog needs.
Health
The Royal Kennel Club asks smooth-haired Dachshund breeders to have eyes tested, and asks miniature smooth-haired breeders to DNA test for progressive retinal atrophy (cord1) as well. It lists the lifespan of both as over 12 years.
A rescue dog's parents were rarely health tested, so ask the rescue what vet checks the dog has had and whether any condition is known. Your own vet is the right person to advise on anything you notice later.
