What Dobermanns are like to live with
The Dobermann takes its name from Louis Dobermann, a tax collector in Germany who wanted a protective dog, and The Royal Kennel Club calls it an "intelligent and courageous service dog". It says the breed's intelligence and trainability have been used by the armed forces and the police, and that its "loyal and obedient nature equips him to be an excellent family dog".
That describes the breed, not one dog. A rescue Dobermann may be a cross, and each has its own history. The rescue will know how this particular dog behaves at home, on the lead and with visitors, so ask them.
Size and exercise
The Royal Kennel Club lists the Dobermann as large and needing more than two hours of exercise a day. It suggests a large house with a large garden, in town or country.

The coat is short and needs grooming about once a week, though it does shed.

The Royal Kennel Club asks Dobermann breeders to DNA test for von Willebrand disease (vWD1) and DINGS2, to have hips scored for dysplasia, and to have eyes tested at least once before breeding (for PHPV). It lists the breed's lifespan as over 10 years.
