What Border Terriers are like to live with
The Border Terrier takes its name from the borders of Northumberland and Scotland, where it worked alongside the Border Foxhounds. The Royal Kennel Club describes it as an "active, game and adaptable working terrier", and says Border Terriers are "intelligent, affectionate and good natured dogs". It adds that they "thrive on being part of family life and do not do well left alone for long periods".
The Royal Kennel Club also says the breed keeps "a strong prey drive and a natural instinct to dig and chase", and says recall training and secure fencing are essential. A rescue Border Terrier is still an individual, and may be a cross. The rescue will know how this particular dog behaves at home and on the lead, so ask them.
Size and exercise
The Royal Kennel Club's summary lists up to an hour of exercise a day, and its notes on the breed say "generally at least one hour a day", with mental stimulation as well. It lists the Border Terrier as small and says it can live in a flat, with a small or medium garden, in town or country. It warns buyers to expect "a lively, engaged companion rather than a low maintenance lap dog".
Grooming
The coat is short and sheds. The Royal Kennel Club says it needs grooming more than once a week.
Health
The Royal Kennel Club asks Border Terrier breeders to DNA test for spongiform leucoencephalomyelopathy (SLEM). It lists the lifespan as over 12 years.
