The best dog rescues in Manchester, compared

There is no single best dog rescue in Manchester: the right one depends on the dog you want, which side of the city you live on and how your days run. These are the rescues within about 25 miles of the city centre whose dogs we list, side by side, plus Dogs Trust Manchester and the other charities you can contact yourself.

The short answer

For a rescue inside the City of Manchester, start with Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home in Harpurhey, which charges £200 for an adult dog and £250 for a puppy and also has a home at Grappenhall, near Warrington. For a greyhound, Makants Greyhound Rescue N.W is at Tyldesley, and Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary near Ramsbottom rehomes dogs, cats and rabbits. The other rescues we list are spread from Bolton and Oldham to Warrington and Macclesfield. Dogs Trust Manchester is at Denton, but we don't list its dogs, so search its own site.

Rescue adoption fees
Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
Manchester-area rescues that publish a fee
Most ask £160 to £250 for an adult dog: £160 at Windyway Animal Rescue, £200 at Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home, and £250 at Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary, Destitute Animals Shelter and Pennine Pen Animal Rescue. Makants Greyhound Rescue N.W asks a £175 homing donation. The table below quotes each one.
Buying a puppy
Blue Cross puts the cost of buying a puppy at £400 to £3,000, before food, insurance and vet bills.
Owning a dog
PDSA estimates a dog costs at least £6,200 over its lifetime, and up to a minimum of £18,800 depending on the breed (its 2024 figures, not counting buying the dog).

Every rescue below is based, or keeps the dogs we list, within about 25 miles of central Manchester. Click a name to see the dogs it has listed with us today, or follow the fee link to the rescue's own page. Each rescue runs its own application, home check and fee: we don't rehome dogs ourselves.

Expect some travel. Of the rescues we list, only Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home has premises inside the City of Manchester, at Harpurhey in the north of the city. The rest are in the boroughs and counties around it, from Tyldesley and Bolton in the west to Oldham in the east, and south to Warrington and Macclesfield. Greenleaf Animal Rescue and Silver Fox Dog Rescue are foster networks whose dogs can be almost anywhere in the UK.

Which Manchester rescue for which dog

The table is alphabetical. Grouped by where they are and the dogs they take, it looks like this.

Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home, Harpurhey

The only rescue we list with premises inside the city, on Moss Brook Road in Harpurhey, with a second home on Knutsford Road at Grappenhall. Its adoption form sets out five steps: you apply, one of its adoptions team assesses the application, the team contacts you if you are successful, a virtual home visit follows, and then you meet the dog at the home. The form asks which of its two homes the dog is at. Its banner says it is open for viewing only from Wednesday to Sunday, 1pm to 4pm, and closed on Monday and Tuesday.

The fee is £200 for an adult dog and £250 for a puppy. Both include a full health check, neutering, a first vaccination, a microchip, four weeks' free Pet Plan insurance, and a collar and ID tag. It says it will never put a healthy dog down.

Where Manchester's strays go

Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home in Harpurhey is also Manchester City Council's nominated kennels for strays found in the city. The council says strays are looked after for 7 full days, "after which the dog becomes the property of the Dogs' Home and is put up for adoption". The council tells owners of a lost dog to check with the Dogs' Home. That is Manchester City Council's own rule, and it covers the City of Manchester only.

Greyhounds at Tyldesley

Makants Greyhound Rescue N.W rehomes retired greyhounds from its kennels at Tyldesley, Greater Manchester. The kennels are not open for general visits: you meet a greyhound by appointment with a volunteer, the rehoming coordinator visits your home, and a two-week home trial is offered before you adopt. It asks a £175 homing donation, and adopted greyhounds come with four weeks' Petplan insurance.

Its rules are clear. It prefers children over 5, a greyhound shouldn't be left for more than 4 hours, your fence should be at least 5 foot high with a lockable gate, and it cannot consider homes with shared communal gardens. It says ex-racers wouldn't suit a home with cats.

North of the city: Bolton and Ramsbottom

Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary at Edenfield, near Ramsbottom, rehomes dogs, cats and rabbits. You apply online from the animal's page, and it says it will only contact you if it seems a good match. It doesn't rehome dogs to homes with children under five, asks for a secure garden, and doesn't rehome young dogs to homes where they would be left alone for more than four hours. Its fee is £250 for a dog and £300 for a puppy, sometimes less for older dogs and some pairs.

Destitute Animals Shelter is at Great Lever in Bolton. A member of staff visits every dog adopter's home before they are accepted, and kennel viewing is by appointment only. If you rent, you need your landlord's permission before you apply. Its fee is £250 for a dog.

East and south: Oldham, Macclesfield and Warrington

Pennine Pen Animal Rescue on Honeywell Lane, Oldham, is open by appointment only, and checks your home, with evidence that the garden is secure, before any dog goes. Its £250 fee includes neutering, the first two vaccinations, flea and worm treatment and a microchip. Windyway Animal Rescue at Macclesfield asks for an application, then a vet reference, character reference or home visit, and the whole household meets the dog. Viewing is by appointment, and a dog or puppy costs £160.

Warrington Animal Welfare on Slutchers Lane starts with an enquiry on the dog's profile and a phone call; you meet the dog, often more than once, then reserve it and have a home check. It doesn't rehome to families with children under 5, needs a secure garden and home checks within a reasonable distance of Warrington. Its adult dog fee is £250 or more, and a puppy under 12 months is £500.

Foster networks with dogs near Manchester

Greenleaf Animal Rescue runs a national foster network, so each dog's page says where it is. Silver Fox Dog Rescue has no premises; its dogs live in foster homes around the UK and each page names the town. Its adoption donation is £400, or £500 for young pups. To reserve a dog it takes a £50 non-refundable deposit, which it refunds only if the home check fails. That is Silver Fox's own process, set out on its site.

West Yorkshire Dog Rescue fosters dogs in West Yorkshire. It says new owners must live within 100 miles of West Yorkshire and be aged 25 or over, and it doesn't rehome to homes with children under five. Labrador Rescue (North West Area) lists its Labradors at Eccleston in Lancashire; you apply on a specific dog's page, it considers the applications for that dog together and contacts the most appropriate applicant. Our Labrador adoption guide covers it and the other Labrador routes.

Breed rescues that cover Manchester

These breed rescues are not Manchester rescues, but each says it covers the North West or works across the UK. Contact them directly, and expect their own rules.

How to choose a Manchester rescue

Start from your own circumstances, because each rescue's rules decide who it can rehome to. These are the ones Manchester adopters run into most.

  • You have young children. Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary, West Yorkshire Dog Rescue and Warrington Animal Welfare don't rehome dogs to homes with children under five, and Makants prefers children over 5.
  • You work long days. Bleakholt doesn't rehome young dogs to homes where they would be left alone for more than four hours (five and a half for a dog of four or more), Makants Greyhound Rescue N.W says 4 hours, and West Yorkshire Dog Rescue five. Say plainly how the dog's day would be covered.
  • Your garden. Makants wants a fence at least 5 foot high and can't consider shared communal gardens; Pennine Pen Animal Rescue wants evidence that your garden is secure. A small garden can still suit some dogs, so describe yours honestly.
  • You rent. Destitute Animals Shelter needs your landlord's permission before you apply, and Warrington Animal Welfare asks for it too, so get it in writing first.
  • You have a cat. Makants says ex-racing greyhounds wouldn't suit a home with cats. Other rescues judge each dog, so check each dog's profile for whether it has lived with cats.
  • Where you live. Warrington Animal Welfare home checks within a reasonable distance of Warrington, and West Yorkshire Dog Rescue rehomes within 100 miles of West Yorkshire. Check before you apply.

How adopting from a Manchester rescue works

The order varies, but most rescues around Manchester follow the same steps. A "home check" is a visit, by a volunteer or sometimes by video, to see that your home suits the dog. It is not an inspection of how tidy you are.

  1. Find a dog on the rescue's site or ours, and read its profile for the home it needs (children, cats, other dogs, garden).
  2. Apply or enquire. Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home assesses your application first and contacts you if you are successful; Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary only replies if it seems a good match.
  3. Have the home check. At the Dogs' Home it is a virtual home visit; at Destitute Animals Shelter a member of staff visits before you are accepted.
  4. Meet the dog, often more than once and with your household and any dog you already have. Makants Greyhound Rescue N.W offers a two-week home trial before you adopt.
  5. Pay the fee and take your dog home. At most rescues the fee covers vet work already done, such as neutering and microchipping. Warrington Animal Welfare says payment can be made by card, cash or cheque.

Dogs Trust Manchester and other charities to contact directly

Some of the best-known rehoming charities have centres near Manchester. We don't list their dogs, so search their own sites.

  • Dogs Trust Manchester is at Manchester Parkway in Denton, M34, about 6 miles from the city centre in Tameside. You can browse on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 4pm, and Wednesday and Friday mornings are by pre-arranged appointment. Dogs Trust fees are in the cost box above. Dogs Trust dogs are not on LocalPetFinder.
  • Blue Cross runs the Blue Cross Greater Manchester rehoming, advice and behaviour unit on Blackburn Street in Radcliffe, about 6 miles away in Bury, for cats, dogs, rabbits and small pets.
  • The RSPCA also rehomes animals; search on its own site. Its local branch, RSPCA Manchester and Salford Branch, has an animal centre in Salford and rehomes cats, rabbits and other small animals rather than dogs.

Find a breed in Manchester

Each breed page lists every dog of that breed with the rescues above, nearest first, with its own questions and answers. Makants rehomes greyhounds, so greyhounds and lurchers are worth watching for near Manchester. There are pages too for Staffies, crossbreeds, Labradors, French Bulldogs, Huskies, German Shepherds, Jack Russells, Shih Tzus, Chihuahuas, poodles and doodles and Yorkies, and for puppies, older dogs and small dogs.

The law in England

Microchipping and change of keeper

In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.

Lucy's Law: buying a puppy

In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Banned dog types

In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.

XL Bully dogs

In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).

Questions

What is the best dog rescue in Manchester?

There isn't one best rescue: it depends on the dog you want and your home. Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home in Harpurhey is the only rescue we list inside the city. For greyhounds, Makants Greyhound Rescue N.W is at Tyldesley, and Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary near Ramsbottom rehomes dogs, cats and rabbits. The comparison table on this page sets out each rescue's area, process and fee.

Can I see Dogs Trust Manchester dogs on LocalPetFinder?

No. We don't list Dogs Trust dogs, so search Dogs Trust's own site. Dogs Trust Manchester is at Manchester Parkway in Denton, and you can browse on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 4pm. Dogs Trust charges £300 to adopt a dog in England. The rescues in our table are the ones whose dogs you can browse here.

How much does it cost to adopt a dog from a Manchester rescue?

Most dog rescues around Manchester that publish a fee ask £160 to £250 for an adult dog. Windyway Animal Rescue charges £160, Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home £200, and Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary, Destitute Animals Shelter and Pennine Pen Animal Rescue £250. Makants asks a £175 homing donation for a greyhound, and puppies cost more at several rescues.

Are there dog rescues inside Manchester itself?

One that we list. Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home has its Manchester home in Harpurhey, and it is also the council's nominated kennels for the city's strays. Dogs Trust Manchester is at Denton, just outside the city, but we don't list its dogs. The other rescues we list are in the surrounding boroughs and counties, such as Bolton, Oldham, Tyldesley and Warrington.

Where can I adopt a greyhound near Manchester?

Makants Greyhound Rescue N.W at Tyldesley is the greyhound rescue we list, and it asks a £175 homing donation. Its kennels are by appointment only, it offers a two-week home trial, and it says ex-racers wouldn't suit a home with cats. Home Run Hounds North West also rehomes greyhounds across the North West, and greyhounds and lurchers come through the general rescues too.

Why does Silver Fox Dog Rescue ask for a deposit?

It is that rescue's own process: Silver Fox takes a £50 non-refundable deposit to reserve a dog, and refunds it only if the home check fails. Its adoption donation is £400, or £500 for young pups. Silver Fox is not a Manchester rescue; its dogs are in foster homes around the UK. Our advice never to pay a deposit is about private sellers, not rescues explaining their own steps.

What happens to stray dogs found in Manchester?

In the City of Manchester, strays go to Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home in Harpurhey, the council's nominated kennels. Manchester City Council says strays are looked after for 7 full days, after which the dog becomes the property of the Dogs' Home and is put up for adoption. Can I adopt a dog in Manchester if I rent or work full time?

Sometimes, depending on the rescue and the dog. Destitute Animals Shelter needs your landlord's permission before you apply, and Warrington Animal Welfare asks for it too. Bleakholt doesn't rehome young dogs where they would be left alone for more than four hours, and Makants says 4 hours, so explain how the dog's day would be covered.
