Adopting a greyhound in Manchester: rescues, costs and health
No breed turns up in rescue near Manchester as often as the greyhound. Two specialist greyhound rescues have kennels within about 12 miles of the city, and the big general rescue in Harpurhey rehomes them too. Below: each rescue's steps and fees, and the fence, cat and muzzle rules to check before you apply.

The short answer
Two specialist greyhound rescues sit within 12 miles of Manchester, and we list both: Makants Greyhound Rescue N.W at Tyldesley, about 10 miles away, and Home Run Hounds North West at Rixton, near Warrington. Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home and Warrington Animal Welfare rehome greyhounds too. Makants asks a £175 homing donation and the Dogs' Home £200 for an adult dog. Expect an ex-racer of three or more, not a puppy.
- Rescue adoption fees
- Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
- Greyhound rescues near Manchester
- Makants Greyhound Rescue N.W asks a £175 homing donation, Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home charges £200 for an adult dog, and Warrington Animal Welfare from £250. Home Run Hounds North West doesn't publish its fee; its Foster to Adopt scheme takes a £30 non-refundable reservation fee, which comes off the adoption fee if you keep the dog.
- Buying a puppy
- A bought puppy costs £400 to £3,000 according to Blue Cross, and food, insurance and vet bills come on top. No source we trust gives a greyhound-only price, so we leave one out.
- A lifetime with a large dog
- PDSA classes the greyhound as a large breed and puts the minimum lifetime cost of a large dog at £8,200 to £18,800, on 2024 prices. That includes insurance but not vet treatment if the dog falls ill.

Where to adopt a greyhound in Manchester
The number under the short answer updates itself: it counts every greyhound we list within about 25 miles of Manchester, and our Manchester greyhound page sends you to each dog's rescue. When we checked on 20 October 2026, greyhounds were the breed listed most often near the city, and plenty of others were already reserved, so new arrivals can go quickly.
Makants Greyhound Rescue N.W
An independent, self-funded rescue based in Tyldesley, in Greater Manchester, founded in 2013 and with over 770 greyhounds homed so far. It mainly takes retired racers from all over the country, plus greyhounds whose owners can no longer look after them, and assesses, neuters, vaccinates and microchips each one before it goes.
The kennels are not open for general visits, so arrange a time first. You can meet a greyhound with a volunteer and are encouraged to walk the hounds several times. Its rehoming coordinator then visits your home to talk through which dogs might suit, and a two-week home trial comes before the adoption is final. See its dogs on our Makants page.
Home Run Hounds North West
A registered charity that rehomes former racing greyhounds across the North West, with kennels at Rixton, a short drive from Junction 21 of the M6 and about 12 miles from the city. Visits are by appointment. To start, you fill in the interest form on its adoption page and it gets back to you.
If you have young children or a dog already, ask about its Foster to Adopt scheme, which is only for those households: the greyhound lives with you on trial first, and you are under no obligation to adopt at the end. When we checked on 20 October 2026, most of its greyhounds were already reserved. Its dogs are on our Home Run Hounds North West page.
Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home and other rescues
Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home had greyhounds at both its homes, in Harpurhey and at Grappenhall near Warrington, when we checked on 20 October 2026. Its process has five steps: an application, an assessment, a call if you are successful, a virtual home visit, then meeting the dog. See our Dogs' Home page.
Warrington Animal Welfare has listed greyhounds with us too, and Destitute Animals Shelter in Bolton has had one. Dogs Trust Manchester, at Denton, rehomes dogs as well; we don't list its dogs. Our guide to Manchester dog rescues compares every rescue near the city.
Lurchers
If the greyhound look appeals, widen the search. Dogs Trust describes a lurcher as a sighthound, such as a greyhound, whippet or saluki, crossed with another breed, and the rescues around Manchester list lurchers too: see our Manchester lurcher page.
Why so many greyhounds need homes
Racing is the main reason. About 8,000 greyhounds leave racing every year, by its homepage's figure, and the Greyhound Trust homes around half; it gives the usual retirement age as three to five. Makants, for one, takes retired racers from all over the country.
Most of the greyhounds at Makants, it says, have lived in kennels all their lives, so ordinary house life is new to them. The rescue gives each one time in its home-from-home room first, but Makants says house training will still take time and patience.
Adopting or buying a greyhound: what you pay
Adopting near Manchester costs from £175 at the rescues that publish a figure, and the vet work is already done. Makants neuters, vaccinates and chips its dogs and adds four weeks' free Petplan insurance. At Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home, the £200 covers a full health check, neutering, a first vaccination, a microchip, a collar and ID tag and four weeks' Pet Plan insurance.
Buying puts those bills on you. A breeder must microchip a puppy by 8 weeks under UK law, so the chip comes with it, but PDSA counts vaccinations and neutering among a large dog's £560 set-up cost, on top of a puppy price that Blue Cross puts at £400 to £3,000. Then budget at least £116 a month, PDSA's floor for a large dog.
Greyhound health: teeth first
Ask about teeth before anything else. Dental disease affected 39.0 per cent of the 5,419 pet greyhounds in a Royal Veterinary College VetCompass study of 2016 vet records, more than any other problem, and the paper suggests ex-racers may have had little dental care while racing. Then ask about:
- Legs and paws. Overgrown nails, injuries and arthritis also showed up often in that study; watch the dog walk and ask about any track injury.
- Other conditions. PDSA's greyhound page names bloat, an emergency where the stomach twists, a slow loss of sight called progressive retinal atrophy, bone cancer, and von Willebrand's disease, which stops blood clotting properly.
- Nerves. Breeders are asked by The Royal Kennel Club to DNA test for greyhound neuropathy, a nerve disease.
Living with a retired racer in Manchester
Check the rules before you fall for a dog. Makants needs a garden fenced to at least 5 feet all the way round with a lockable gate, and can't consider homes with shared communal gardens, so a flat with a shared garden won't do. It prefers children in the home to be over 5, asks that a greyhound is never left alone for more than 4 hours unless a dog walker comes in, and says its ex-racers wouldn't be suitable to live with cats. It also asks that its greyhounds are never walked on a retractable lead.
Home Run Hounds North West suggests a muzzle for at least the first few weeks, until you know how your dog reacts to new places and to scraps on the pavement. It warns about sleep startle, a startled snap when a deeply asleep greyhound is woken suddenly, so let the dog wake to its name. For a run off the lead, it points to a hired, enclosed field. Manchester winters are hard on a fine coat: PDSA says greyhounds need a warm coat on winter walks.
If you've been searching "greyhound puppies for sale Manchester"
No rescue sells a greyhound. Each rescue reads your application, picks a dog to suit your home and takes a fee or homing donation. Every greyhound on our Manchester greyhound page comes through a rescue that way, and almost all are adults, so a puppy is the wrong thing to wait for here.
Set on a puppy? Search The Royal Kennel Club's "Find a puppy" listings, and book what Dogs Trust's breed guides call a pre-purchase consultation with a vet to hear the likely health problems and rough costs first. Report a suspected scam advert to Report Fraud (formerly Action Fraud).
The law in England
Microchipping and change of keeper
In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
Lucy's Law: buying a puppy
In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
Banned dog types
In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
XL Bully dogs
In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).
Questions

Which greyhound rescues are closest to Manchester?
Makants Greyhound Rescue N.W in Tyldesley, about 10 miles from the city, and Home Run Hounds North West at Rixton, about 12 miles away, are greyhound rescues whose dogs we list. Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home in Harpurhey and Warrington Animal Welfare rehome greyhounds too. Our Manchester greyhound page shows every one listed today.
Does adopting cost less than buying a greyhound puppy?
Usually, yes. Makants asks a £175 homing donation and Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home £200 for an adult dog, with neutering, vaccination, a microchip and four weeks' insurance included. A puppy costs £400 to £3,000 by Blue Cross's figures, and you then pay for the neutering and jabs yourself.
Can I get a greyhound for free, or for £175 or less, near Manchester?
Not free: no rescue gives greyhounds away, but Makants Greyhound Rescue N.W asks only a £175 homing donation. The fee covers work already done, as Makants neuters, vaccinates and chips every dog before it goes. A "free to good home" greyhound advert is a private sale with no rescue checks, so see the dog where it lives and check its microchip details before agreeing to anything.
Should I look for a greyhound puppy or a retired racer?
Almost always the ex-racer. The Greyhound Trust gives three to five as the usual retirement age, and those are the dogs the rescues near Manchester have. Its rescue has watched it with strangers and other dogs and seen how it copes when left.
Why are there so many greyhounds in rescue?
Most are retired racers. Racing retires about 8,000 a year, the Greyhound Trust says, and it can home only around half. Makants takes retired racers from all over the country, as well as greyhounds whose owners can no longer care for them.
What health problems should I ask about with a rescue greyhound?
Teeth first: dental disease affected 39.0 per cent of pet greyhounds in a Royal Veterinary College VetCompass study, more than any other problem. Bloat, failing sight (PRA), bone cancer and the bleeding disorder von Willebrand's disease are on PDSA's list too. Ask what dental work the rescue's vet has done and whether the dog has any old injury.
Is a greyhound of 6 or older worth adopting?
Often, yes. With a lifespan of over 10 years (The Royal Kennel Club) or up to 15 (Greyhound Trust), a six- or seven-year-old still has a good stretch left, and you know its habits from day one. Some charities charge less for older dogs: Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over.
Can a rescue greyhound live with my cat?
Not from Makants: it says its ex-racers, who come straight from the racing industry, wouldn't be suitable to live with cats. Other rescues decide dog by dog, so tell them about any cat or small pet before you apply.
Can I try a greyhound at home before adopting?
Yes, near Manchester. Makants offers a two-week home trial before you adopt, and Home Run Hounds North West runs a Foster to Adopt scheme for homes with young children or another dog, with a £30 reservation fee that comes off the adoption fee if you keep the dog.
