When we checked on 29 October 2026, nine greyhounds were listed near Plymouth: eight with Gables Dogs & Cats Home at Plympton, on the eastern edge of Plymouth, and one with Woodside Animal Welfare Trust, just east of the city. Eight were male and one female.
Gables rehomes to anyone over 21 and matches each animal to a home individually. It charges £150 for a crossbreed dog and says prices for pedigrees vary, so ask about a greyhound's fee; the fee covers a behaviour assessment, neutering, a vet check and a microchip. At Woodside every dog needs a visit to your home first and a fully enclosed garden.

Many greyhounds in UK rescue are retired racing dogs. The Greyhound Trust says most retire from racing between three and five years old, so a rescue greyhound is usually a young adult rather than a puppy. The Royal Kennel Club notes that the greyhound seen in the show ring is larger and heavier than the racing greyhound.
As of 8 November 2026, 8 greyhounds are listed with rescues in and around Plymouth on LocalPetFinder: by their listed age, 8 adults.
1 of them is listed as a cross, as the rescue describes it: Greyhound x Welsh Foxhound. Breed labels on rescue listings are often a best guess from looks.
The rescues mark 7 as able to live with children and 7 with other dogs. Where a profile says nothing, it doesn't mean no: ask the rescue.

Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Many rescue fees are under £500: Dogs Trust charges £300, and Blue Cross from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped by 8 weeks old, and in England, Wales and Scotland a dog can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, so ask to see the microchip details.
