The best dog rescues in Plymouth, compared
There is no single best dog rescue in Plymouth: the right one depends on the dog you want, your home and garden, and how far you can travel. These are the rescues within about 25 miles of the city whose dogs we list, side by side, plus the breed charities you can contact yourself.

The short answer
The two rescues nearest the city centre whose dogs we list are at Plympton and just east of the city: Gables Dogs & Cats Home, which asks £150 for a crossbreed dog and rehomes to people over 21, and Woodside Animal Welfare Trust, which asks £200 for a dog over 6 months and needs a fully enclosed garden. German Shepherd Rescue Elite has its registered office at Callington, about 12 miles away, and Animals in Distress (Torbay & Westcountry) at Ipplepen, about 23 miles, asks £325 for an adult dog.

Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

Which Plymouth rescue for which dog
The table is in rough order of distance. Here is how each one works.
Gables Dogs & Cats Home, Plympton
At 204 Merafield Road, Plympton. Gables has every dog's temperament assessed by a qualified dog behaviourist to judge the kind of home it needs, and rehomes only in Devon, Somerset, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, to people over 21. You fill in its adoption application for a dog you like, or as a general application; its rehoming team calls you if it has a potential match, and otherwise keeps your details for 3 months. It doesn't advertise all its puppies, so it keeps a puppy waiting list.
If there is a match, everyone in the household comes in to meet the dog, a dog you already have meets it on neutral ground at Gables, and the team then brings the dog to your home for a home visit. Viewing is by appointment once you are matched. Its fee is £150 for a crossbreed dog and £200 for a crossbreed puppy, with pedigree prices varying, and includes the behavioural assessment, neutering, a vet health check, a microchip, vaccination, flea and worm prevention and a collar and lead.
Woodside Animal Welfare Trust, Plympton
At Elfordleigh, Plympton. It homes to Plymouth and areas within about 25 miles, and visits every home before a dog goes; it won't rehome a dog to a property with no garden or a communal one, and the garden must be fully enclosed with fencing suitable for the dog, on average 6ft. It says it takes each home on its merits rather than refusing older owners or families with young children outright, carries out post-adoption checks, and always takes its animals back if things don't work out.
German Shepherd Rescue Elite, Callington
A national German Shepherd charity, which also lists Malinois and Dutch Shepherds, with its registered office at Kelly Bray, near Callington, about 12 miles from Plymouth. When we checked on 28 October 2026 most of the shepherd-type dogs listed with us near Plymouth were its dogs, filed at Callington: see our German Shepherd Rescue Elite page and our Plymouth German Shepherd page, and contact the charity about its process and donation.
Margaret Green Animal Rescue, Wingletang
Its Wingletang centre is near Tavistock in West Devon, about 15 miles north; the charity's other two centres are in Dorset. Its fee is discussed with you when you reserve an animal, and it covers neutering, vaccinations, worming and flea treatment, health checks and microchipping.
Animals in Distress (Torbay & Westcountry), Ipplepen
At Ipplepen, near Newton Abbot, about 23 miles east, and not the Salford charity of a similar name. You apply with the "Apply to rehome me" button on a dog's page; if you match, you meet the dog on a series of walks, it meets your family and any dogs you have, and an assessment interview follows. Its kennels are open by appointment only, its reception daily from 10am to 4pm, and it keeps general applications for 3 months.
How to choose a rescue near Plymouth
Start with the dog, not the rescue: our Plymouth page lists every dog with each rescue, so filter by size, age or breed and see who has it. Then check four things on the rescue's own page:
- Your garden. Woodside needs a fully enclosed garden with fencing on average 6ft; ask the others before you apply.
- Who lives with you. Gables rehomes dogs only to people over 21, and matches dogs to children by assessment; Woodside takes each home on its merits.
- The fee. Gables, Woodside and Animals in Distress publish one (see the table above). Ask the others what theirs is and what it covers.
- Visits. Gables and Animals in Distress see adopters by appointment after a successful application, and Woodside visits your home first, so apply before you travel.
Breed charities that cover Devon and Cornwall
Some breed charities cover the area but don't list their dogs with us. German Shepherd Rescue's South West Region covers Cornwall and Devon, and listed 10 dogs on its own site on 28 October 2026. Forever Hounds Trust, a greyhound and lurcher charity, considers homes without gardens and smaller properties case by case. Jack Russell Terrier Rescue UK rehomes Jack Russells across the UK, though its foster homes are outside the South West.
The law in England
Microchipping and change of keeper
In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
Lucy's Law: buying a puppy
In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
Banned dog types
In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
XL Bully dogs
In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).
