About Greyhounds in Liverpool

When we checked on 29 October 2026, 26 greyhounds were listed with rescues within reach of Liverpool, most aged between two and seven. Makants Greyhound Rescue at Tyldesley, about 22 miles from Liverpool, had 13 of them; Home Run Hounds North West at Rixton, about 20 miles from Liverpool, had six; Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home at Warrington, about 16 miles from Liverpool, had four; Warrington Animal Welfare had two; and North Clwyd Animal Rescue had one.

Makants asks for a £175 homing donation and includes four weeks of free Petplan insurance. It always carries out a home check, offers a two-week home trial, and needs a secure garden with a fence at least five feet high and a lockable gate; shared communal gardens are not accepted. Because its dogs come straight from racing kennels, it says they would not suit homes with cats. It prefers children in the home to be over five and does not want a dog left alone for more than about four hours without a walker. Its kennels are open by appointment only.

What greyhounds are like to live with

Many greyhounds in UK rescue are retired racing dogs. The Greyhound Trust says most retire from racing between three and five years old, so a rescue greyhound is usually a young adult rather than a puppy. The Royal Kennel Club notes that the greyhound seen in the show ring is larger and heavier than the racing greyhound.

Where can I adopt a greyhound in Liverpool?

With the rescue that has the dog. Today the greyhounds on this page are with Makants Greyhound Rescue N.W (13), Home Run Hounds North West (7), Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home (3), Warrington Animal Welfare (2) and North Clwyd Animal Rescue (1). Open a profile and apply to that rescue: each one runs its own application, home check and adoption fee. We don't rehome animals ourselves.

Can I adopt a retired racing greyhound in Liverpool?

Yes. Many greyhounds in UK rescue are retired racers: the Greyhound Trust says most retire from racing between three and five years old. The greyhounds listed on this page are with rescues and rehoming centres, and each profile links to the rescue to apply.

Do greyhounds need a lot of exercise?

No. The Greyhound Trust says greyhounds are built for speed rather than stamina and are happy with two twenty-minute walks a day, and Battersea says they generally prefer around two 30-minute walks. Blue Cross says many sleep 16 to 18 hours a day.

Are greyhounds good with children?

It depends on the dog, not the breed. Today the rescues mark 11 of the 26 greyhounds listed in and around Liverpool as able to live with children. Where a profile says nothing, ask the rescue what age of children the dog could live with.

How much does it cost to adopt a greyhound in Liverpool?

The greyhounds listed in and around Liverpool today are with Makants Greyhound Rescue N.W at Tyldesley, about 22 miles away (13), Home Run Hounds North West at Rixton, about 20 miles away (7), Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home at Warrington, about 16 miles away (3) and 2 other rescues; each profile shows that rescue's fee. Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

Are there greyhound puppies for sale in Liverpool?

No. We don't list animals for sale. Every greyhound on this page is with a rescue or rehoming centre. The 26 greyhounds listed in and around Liverpool today are with Makants Greyhound Rescue N.W at Tyldesley, about 22 miles away (13), Home Run Hounds North West at Rixton, about 20 miles away (7), Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home at Warrington, about 16 miles away (3) and 2 other rescues, and each rescue shows its own fee on the profile. For comparison, Dogs Trust £300, and Blue Cross puppies under six months start from £525. If you searched "greyhound puppies for sale Liverpool", the greyhounds here are the rescue route: you apply to the rescue and pay its adoption fee, not a sale price. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Can I get a free greyhound to a good home in Liverpool, or one under £500?

Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Of the 26 greyhounds listed in and around Liverpool today, each shows its rescue's fee on the profile; the nearest rescue is North Clwyd Animal Rescue at Trelogan, about 16 miles away. Many rescue fees are under £500: Dogs Trust charges £300, and Blue Cross from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped by 8 weeks old, and in England, Wales and Scotland a dog can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, so ask to see the microchip details.

Are there greyhound puppies for adoption in Liverpool?

Not right now: none of the 26 listed in and around Liverpool is under a year old by its listed age. Puppies do get listed, so check back or look at the adults, whose rescues can tell you much more about their character.

Are there older greyhounds for adoption in Liverpool?

Yes: 3 of the 26 listed in and around Liverpool are aged 7 or over by their listed age. Some rescues charge less for older dogs: Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over.
