Adopting a greyhound in Liverpool: rescues, costs and health

When we checked on 21 October 2026, greyhounds were the breed rescues near Liverpool listed most often, but none of the rescues that list them is on Merseyside. The ones that do sit between about 16 and 22 miles out, and two are greyhound specialists. Here is who they are, what each asks, and the fence, cat and teeth questions to settle first.

The short answer

When we checked on 21 October 2026, five rescues listed greyhounds near Liverpool, and our Liverpool greyhound page shows every one available today. Two are specialists: Home Run Hounds North West at Rixton, about 20 miles east, which rehomes across Cheshire and Merseyside, and Makants Greyhound Rescue N.W at Tyldesley, about 22 miles out, which asks a £175 homing donation. Warrington Animal Welfare, Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home and North Clwyd Animal Rescue in North Wales list greyhounds too. Expect a retired racer, not a puppy.

Rescue adoption fees
Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
Greyhound rescues near Liverpool
The lowest published figure is the £175 homing donation at Makants Greyhound Rescue N.W. Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home and North Clwyd Animal Rescue ask £200 for an adult dog (North Clwyd also takes a £20 deposit to reserve), and Warrington Animal Welfare £250 or more. Home Run Hounds North West prints no adoption fee, but reserving a dog for Foster to Adopt costs £30, non-refundable and deducted later if you adopt.
Buying a puppy
By Blue Cross's figures a bought puppy costs £400 to £3,000, before food, insurance and vet bills. We have no reliable greyhound-only price, so none is given.
A lifetime with a large dog
PDSA counts the greyhound as a large dog, and puts a large dog's lifetime minimum at £8,200 to £18,800 on 2024 prices, insurance included but not treatment for illness.

Where to adopt a greyhound near Liverpool

The count under the short answer is live: every greyhound listed with us within about 25 miles of Liverpool, each linked to its rescue on our Liverpool greyhound page. When we checked on 21 October 2026, greyhounds were the breed listed most often around the city, with Makants, Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home, Home Run Hounds North West, Warrington Animal Welfare and North Clwyd Animal Rescue all listing them, and many more already reserved.

The general rescues that list greyhounds

The closest are about 16 miles away. North Clwyd Animal Rescue at Trelogan, in North Wales, accepts adopters from up to 70 miles away and names Merseyside; you meet the dog by appointment and reserve with a £20 deposit. Warrington Animal Welfare, on Slutchers Lane, says it may reduce its fee for older dogs.

Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home keeps its greyhounds at its Cheshire home in Grappenhall, near Warrington. Its process runs in five steps, from an application and assessment to a virtual home visit and then meeting the dog, and its £200 covers a health check, neutering, a first vaccination, a microchip, a collar and ID tag and four weeks' Pet Plan insurance. Our guide to Liverpool dog rescues compares them all.

Lurchers and Dogs Trust Merseyside

A lurcher, says Dogs Trust, is a sighthound such as a greyhound, whippet or saluki crossed with another breed, and the rescues near Liverpool list those too: see our Liverpool lurcher page. Dogs Trust Merseyside at Huyton rehomes dogs of all kinds; we don't list its dogs, so search its own site.

Home Run Hounds North West, Rixton

A volunteer-run registered charity that rehomes former racing greyhounds and says it covers Cheshire, Merseyside and the wider North West. Its kennels are at Rixton, a short drive from Junction 21 of the M6, and visits are by appointment only. Nothing starts until you send the interest form on its adoption page; the charity then gets back to you. It describes its dogs as "45-mile-an-hour couch potatoes", happy with a couple of short walks a day.

Homes that already have a dog or young children, and only those, can use Foster to Adopt: a trial at home, with no duty to keep the greyhound afterwards. See its dogs on our Home Run Hounds North West page.

Makants Greyhound Rescue N.W, Tyldesley

Since 2013, Makants has rehomed over 770 greyhounds from its farm kennels at Tyldesley, without outside funding. Its dogs, mainly ex-racers from around the country, leave assessed, neutered, vaccinated and chipped. Plan a few visits: you must book ahead, and it encourages you to meet a hound with a volunteer and walk dogs more than once.

After a home visit from its coordinator, the dog comes to you for two weeks before anything is final. Read its requirements before you apply: a fence of at least 5 feet all round with a lockable gate, no shared communal gardens, resident dogs neutered, and no more than 4 hours alone without a dog walker. Its current dogs are on our Makants page.

Why so many greyhounds need homes

Racing. About 8,000 greyhounds retire each year, the Greyhound Trust says, and it finds homes for around half; its breed profile puts the usual retirement age at three to five. The national charity homes them through its branches, with each dog neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and four weeks' free insurance; search its site for a branch.

Adopting or buying a greyhound: what you pay

The rescues near Liverpool that publish a fee ask from £175, and the vet work is done. Makants adds four weeks' free Petplan cover, and the Dogs' Home's £200 includes neutering, a first vaccination and a microchip.

Buy a puppy and those bills move to you. UK law has the breeder chip it by 8 weeks, so the chip is part of the price, but PDSA puts a large dog's set-up costs, vaccinations and neutering among them, at £560, then at least £116 a month. That comes after the £400 to £3,000 Blue Cross quotes for the puppy.

Greyhound health: what to ask

Teeth come first. In a Royal Veterinary College VetCompass study of 5,419 greyhounds seen by UK vets in 2016, dental disease affected 39.0 per cent, far more than any other problem; overgrown nails affected 11.1 per cent and osteoarthritis 4.6 per cent. The paper links some of this to their racing years. Ask about:

  • Teeth and old injuries. What dental work has the rescue's vet done, and does the dog have any track injury or stiffness?
  • Other conditions. PDSA lists bloat (a twisted stomach and an emergency), gum disease, progressive retinal atrophy (gradual sight loss), bone cancer and von Willebrand's disease, a bleeding disorder, and warns that overheating and rigid paralysis can sometimes follow exercise.
  • Nerves. Greyhound neuropathy, a nerve disease, has a DNA test that The Royal Kennel Club wants breeders to use.

Greyhounds need less exercise than people expect: about an hour a day, says PDSA, and the Greyhound Trust says two twenty-minute walks keep many happy. They do need a secure space. Makants' 5-foot fence rule and its bar on shared communal gardens rule out most flats, so measure your garden or yard before you apply.

Cats are the other question. Makants says its ex-racers come straight from racing and wouldn't suit a home with cats, while the Greyhound Trust says some greyhounds can be trained to live with them. Mention any cat, rabbit or small pet on your application. On cold walks along the coast, a thin-coated greyhound will want a coat: PDSA says greyhounds need a warm one in winter.

If you've been searching "greyhound puppies for sale Liverpool"

Rescue greyhounds are adopted, not sold: you apply, the rescue matches a dog to your home, and you pay its fee or homing donation. Every greyhound on our Liverpool greyhound page comes that way, and most are retired racers.

If you want a puppy, The Royal Kennel Club lists litters on its "Find a puppy" service, and Dogs Trust's breed guides suggest a pre-purchase consultation with a vet to hear about likely conditions and rough costs. If an advert looks like a scam, tell Report Fraud, the service that replaced Action Fraud.

The law in England

Microchipping and change of keeper

In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.

Lucy's Law: buying a puppy

In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Banned dog types

In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.

XL Bully dogs

In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).

Questions

Which greyhound rescues are closest to Liverpool?

North Clwyd Animal Rescue at Trelogan, in North Wales, and Warrington Animal Welfare are about 16 miles away, and Manchester & Cheshire Dogs' Home has greyhounds at Grappenhall, near Warrington. The two greyhound specialists are Home Run Hounds North West at Rixton, about 20 miles, and Makants Greyhound Rescue N.W at Tyldesley, about 22. We list all five, and our Liverpool greyhound page shows every greyhound available today.

Is it cheaper to adopt a greyhound than to buy a puppy?

Usually. North Clwyd Animal Rescue and the Dogs' Home at Grappenhall ask £200 for an adult and Makants £175, with the neutering and chipping already done. Blue Cross puts a bought puppy at £400 to £3,000, and the neutering and jabs then fall to you.

Can I get a greyhound for free, or for £175 or less, near Liverpool?

Not free, but £175 is the homing donation at Makants Greyhound Rescue N.W, the lowest published fee near the city. Warrington Animal Welfare says its adoption fee rarely covers what it spends caring for and rehoming an animal. Nobody has vetted a greyhound offered "free to good home" in a private advert, so visit it at home and make sure its microchip is registered to the person handing it over.

Should I look for a greyhound puppy or a retired racer?

A retired racer. The Greyhound Trust gives the usual retirement age as three to five, and those are the dogs the rescues near Liverpool rehome. Kennel staff will already know how the dog copes with people, other dogs and being left.

Why are so many greyhounds in rescue?

Because racing retires so many. Of roughly 8,000 retiring each year, the Greyhound Trust rehomes about half by its own figures. Makants also takes greyhounds from owners who can no longer care for them.

What health problems should I ask about with a rescue greyhound?

Teeth first: dental disease was the commonest problem in a Royal Veterinary College VetCompass study, at 39.0 per cent. PDSA adds bloat, progressive retinal atrophy (which slowly takes sight), osteosarcoma (bone cancer) and von Willebrand's disease, a clotting problem. Ask what dental and vet work the rescue has done and about any old racing injury.

Is an older greyhound a good choice?

Often. A greyhound of six or seven may well have several years to come: The Royal Kennel Club says over 10, the Greyhound Trust up to 15. Older dogs may cost less at Warrington Animal Welfare, at its discretion, and Blue Cross fees for dogs of 8 and over start from £235.

Can a rescue greyhound live with my cat?

Not from Makants, which says its ex-racers wouldn't be suitable to live with cats. The Greyhound Trust says some greyhounds can be trained to live with cats, so other rescues judge each dog; tell them about any cat or small pet before you apply.

Can I try a greyhound at home before adopting?

Yes, at both specialists. Makants gives every adopter two weeks at home before the adoption is final, and Home Run Hounds North West offers Foster to Adopt to households with young children or a dog already, for a £30 reservation fee that is deducted if you adopt.
