What Dachshunds are like to live with

The Royal Kennel Club describes the Dachshund as a "German badger and rabbit hunter" that "comes in a variety of sizes and coat types". It says the breed is known in Germany as the Teckel (badger dog), and is still used there for tracking wounded game and going to ground after badgers or rabbits.

Where can I adopt a Dachshund in Lancashire?

With the rescue that has the dog. Today the Dachshunds on this page are with Animal Care Lancaster Morecambe & District (2). Open a profile and apply to that rescue: each one runs its own application, home check and adoption fee. We don't rehome animals ourselves.

What is the difference between a Dachshund and a miniature Dachshund?

Size. The Royal Kennel Club recognises two sizes in the UK. The breed standards give an ideal weight of 9 to 12 kg for the standard size and 4.5 kg for a miniature, with a desired maximum of 5 kg. Both sizes come in smooth-haired, long-haired and wirehaired coats, and all six varieties share the same breed standard.

Do Dachshunds have back problems?

They can. Dogs Trust says Dachshunds are predisposed to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), similar to a slipped disc in humans, which can cause weakness, loss of balance and even paralysis. The Royal Kennel Club asks breeders to screen their dogs' spines under its IVDD screening scheme. Ask the rescue whether this dog has had any back problems, and see your vet promptly if you notice weakness or wobbliness.

Are Dachshunds good with children?

It depends on the dog, not the breed. Most of the 2 Dachshunds listed in Lancashire today don't say either way, so ask the rescue. Where a profile says nothing, ask the rescue what age of children the dog could live with.

How much does it cost to adopt a Dachshund in Lancashire?

The Dachshunds listed in Lancashire today are with Animal Care Lancaster Morecambe & District at Lancaster (2); each profile shows that rescue's fee. Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

The 2 Dachshunds listed in Lancashire today are with Animal Care Lancaster Morecambe & District at Lancaster (2), and each rescue shows its own fee on the profile. For comparison, Dogs Trust £300, and Blue Cross puppies under six months start from £525. If you searched "dachshund puppies for sale Lancashire", the Dachshunds here are the rescue route: you apply to the rescue and pay its adoption fee, not a sale price. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Can I get a free Dachshund to a good home in Lancashire, or one under £500?

Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Of the 2 Dachshunds listed in Lancashire today, each shows its rescue's fee on the profile; all are with Animal Care Lancaster Morecambe & District at Lancaster (2). Many rescue fees are under £500: Dogs Trust charges £300, and Blue Cross from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped by 8 weeks old, and in England, Wales and Scotland a dog can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, so ask to see the microchip details.
