What Labradors are like to live with

The Royal Kennel Club calls the Labrador the "most popular of all pedigree breeds", and says that popularity comes from its "versatility as family companion, service dog, guide dog as well as a working gundog". It says the breed's roots are in Newfoundland, where dogs helped fishermen retrieve nets and lines; dogs brought back to England had their retrieving skills recognised by the sporting gentry, and the first breed club was founded in 1916.

Where can I adopt a Labrador in Kent?

With the rescue that has the dog. Today the Labradors on this page are with Last Chance Animal Rescue (3). Open a profile and apply to that rescue: each one runs its own application, home check and adoption fee. We don't rehome animals ourselves.

How much exercise does a Labrador need?

More than two hours a day, according to The Royal Kennel Club. It lists the breed as suited to a large house with a large garden. Dogs Trust calls Labradors typically high-energy. Ask the rescue how much this dog needs, as age and health make a difference.

Do Labradors shed?

Yes. The Royal Kennel Club lists the Labrador as a breed that sheds, with a short coat that needs grooming about once a week, and Dogs Trust rates its shedding as heavy.

Are Labradors good with children?

It depends on the dog, not the breed. Today the rescues mark 1 of the 3 Labradors listed in Kent as able to live with children. Where a profile says nothing, ask the rescue what age of children the dog could live with.

How much does it cost to adopt a Labrador in Kent?

The Labradors listed in Kent today are with Last Chance Animal Rescue at Edenbridge (3); each profile shows that rescue's fee. Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Battersea charges £230 for a dog over six months and £275 for a puppy under six months, Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

The 3 Labradors listed in Kent today are with Last Chance Animal Rescue at Edenbridge (3), and each rescue shows its own fee on the profile. For comparison, Battersea charges £230 for a dog over six months and £275 for a puppy under six months, and Dogs Trust £300. If you searched "labrador puppies for sale Kent", the Labradors here are the rescue route: you apply to the rescue and pay its adoption fee, not a sale price. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Can I get a free Labrador to a good home in Kent, or one under £500?

Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Of the 3 Labradors listed in Kent today, each shows its rescue's fee on the profile; all are with Last Chance Animal Rescue at Edenbridge (3). Many rescue fees are under £500: Battersea charges £230 for a dog over six months, Dogs Trust £300, and Blue Cross from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped by 8 weeks old, and in England, Wales and Scotland a dog can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, so ask to see the microchip details.

Are there Labrador puppies for adoption in Kent?

Yes: 1 puppy of the 3 listed in Kent is 12 months or under by their listed age.

Are there older Labradors for adoption in Kent?
