About Pugs in London

When we checked on 29 October 2026, three Pugs were listed near London: two with Last Chance Animal Rescue at Edenbridge, about 23 miles from London, and one with Pro Dogs Direct, fostered near Leatherhead, about 17 miles from London. They ranged from a nine-month-old to a ten-year-old.

The Pug Dog Welfare & Rescue Association takes adoption applications from people over 21 living in England and Wales, apart from parts of the South West, so London applicants qualify. It does not accept applicants in full-time work outside the home, asks for a home check and insurance, and sets minimum donations by age, from £500 for a Pug under one to £100 for one aged 11 or over.

National Pug Protection Trust also rehomes Pugs from foster homes, with a virtual home check and meet and greet. It cannot accept homes with children under five or where the dog would be left for more than five hours a day, and its recommended donation runs from £500 for a dog up to two years old to £100 for one aged ten or more.

What Pugs are like to live with

The Pug is a companion dog. The Royal Kennel Club describes it as "a lot of dog in a small frame", and says Pugs "are affectionate, sociable dogs that thrive on human company and were bred purely as companions, not for work". It says traders from the Dutch East India Company are thought to have taken dogs of this type from China to the Netherlands in the 16th century, and that William of Orange's Pugs came with him when he took the English throne.

Breathing is a recognised concern in the breed. PDSA says snorts, snores and loud breathing can be a sign of BOAS and are worth a word with a vet. Ask the rescue what vet checks this dog has had.
