What Beagles are like to live with

The Beagle is a British scenthound. The Royal Kennel Club calls it "the smallest of the British pack hounds", bred to hunt small game and to be followed on foot, and says the breed was established in England by the 15th century and valued for "its stamina, musical voice and exceptional scenting ability". It describes Beagles as "sociable and generally good-tempered, thriving on companionship", and says their friendly nature and manageable size have made them a popular family companion.

Breed descriptions are general. Every rescue animal is an individual, so the rescue's own assessment of the animal comes first.

How many rescue Beagles are available for adoption in Surrey?

As of 8 November 2026, no Beagles are listed for adoption in Surrey on LocalPetFinder. There are 2 Beagles with rescues within 25 miles, shown under "Also near Surrey". Rescues add animals all the time, so this page fills as they list them.

How much exercise does a Beagle need?

The Royal Kennel Club says up to an hour a day. Dogs Trust calls Beagles typically high-energy dogs who need daily walks, play and enrichment. Both point to a dog that needs regular exercise and mental work, and the rescue can tell you what this dog is used to.

Do Beagles shed?

Yes. The Royal Kennel Club lists the Beagle as shedding, and Dogs Trust says the shedding is moderate. The short coat only needs brushing about once a week.

How much does it cost to adopt a Beagle in Surrey?

Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Battersea charges £230 for a dog over six months and £275 for a puppy under six months, Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

Are there Beagle puppies for sale in Surrey?

No. We don't list animals for sale. Every Beagle on this page is with a rescue or rehoming centre. Rescues rehome animals rather than selling them, usually for an adoption fee: for example, Battersea charges £230 for a dog over six months and £275 for a puppy under six months, and Dogs Trust £300. The fee usually goes towards vet work already done, such as neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations. If you searched "beagle puppies for sale Surrey", the Beagles here are the rescue route: you apply to the rescue and pay its adoption fee, not a sale price. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Can I get a free Beagle to a good home in Surrey, or one under £500?

Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Many rescue fees are under £500: Battersea charges £230 for a dog over six months, Dogs Trust £300, and Blue Cross from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped by 8 weeks old, and in England, Wales and Scotland a dog can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, so ask to see the microchip details.

Are there Beagle puppies for adoption in Surrey?

Not right now: no Beagles are listed in Surrey today, so there are no puppies either. See "Also near Surrey" for Beagles with rescues nearby. Puppies do get listed, and rescues can tell you much more about an adult's character, so check back.

Is there a Beagle rescue near me in Surrey?

Because there are only a few here, we also show Beagles from rescues within 25 miles under "Also near Surrey", each with its town and distance. You can also see Beagles across England.
