About British Shorthairs in Birmingham
When we checked on 29 October 2026, one British Shorthair was listed near Birmingham: a cat at Stafford, about 24 miles from Birmingham, posted by its owner through our rehoming service rather than by a rescue. Adopting from an owner works differently: see the cat in its home, pay no deposit before you have met it, and check that its microchip is registered to the person handing it over (our rehoming safety guide). In England every cat must be microchipped by 20 weeks old.
Strawberry Persian and Pedigree Cat Rescue takes in British Shorthairs among other pedigree cats and keeps them in foster homes; its home page names fosterers in Worcestershire, near Worcester and Birmingham, and each cat's listing says where it is. It places indoor-only cats, never where children under eight live now or may in future, and your past vet records and photos of your home take the place of a home check. Cats go neutered, vaccinated and microchipped with five weeks of insurance, and you need someone to drive you home, because it does not allow a cat to travel by public transport. The Southern British Shorthair Cat Club also runs a re-home page where owners post their own vaccinated, neutered adult cats; treat those exactly like the owner listing above.

What British Shorthairs are like to live with
The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF), which registers pedigree cats in the UK, says "half of all kittens registered with the GCCF each year are British Shorthairs, making the British the most popular pedigree cat in the UK." It sums up the breed's temperament as "patient, tolerant and a bit lazy", and calls the British "calm and easygoing". It says the British is not a talkative breed but forms strong bonds with its people.

British Shorthairs in Solihull: your questions
Tap a question to expand
How many rescue British Shorthairs are available for adoption in Solihull?
As of 7 November 2026, no British Shorthairs are listed for adoption in and around Solihull on LocalPetFinder. Rescues add animals all the time, so this page fills as they list them.
Do British Shorthairs need a lot of grooming?
Not usually. The GCCF says the short, dense coat needs grooming during the moulting seasons to remove loose hair, and PDSA says it should not need daily brushing outside them. An older cat may need more help to stop mats forming. The British Longhair needs daily grooming.
Is a British Blue the same as a British Shorthair?
Yes. The British Blue is the blue-coated British Shorthair, which the GCCF calls the "flagship" of the breed. British Shorthairs also come in many other colours and patterns, including tabby, tortoiseshell, colourpointed and tipped.
How much does it cost to adopt a British Shorthair in Solihull?
Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Cats Protection says you can expect to pay £80 to £120 on average for an adult cat and £100 to £120 for a kitten, varying between its branches, and Blue Cross fees start from £150 for cats aged 4 months to 7 years. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
Are there British Shorthair kittens for sale in Solihull?
No. We don't list animals for sale. Every British Shorthair on this page is with a rescue or rehoming centre. Rescues rehome animals rather than selling them, usually for an adoption fee: for example, Cats Protection says £80 to £120 on average for an adult cat and £100 to £120 for a kitten. The fee usually goes towards vet work already done, such as neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations. If you searched "british shorthair kittens for sale Solihull", the British Shorthairs here are the rescue route: you apply to the rescue and pay its adoption fee, not a sale price. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that kittens under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
Can I get a free British Shorthair to a good home in Solihull, or one under £100?
Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. At the large cat charities, fees for one cat are under £200: Cats Protection says £80 to £120 on average for an adult cat and £100 to £120 for a kitten, and Blue Cross fees start from £150 for cats aged 4 months to 7 years. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. In England, cats must be microchipped before they are 20 weeks old, so ask to see the microchip details.
Are there British Shorthair kittens for adoption in Solihull?
Not right now: no British Shorthairs are listed in and around Solihull today, so there are no kittens either. Kittens do get listed, and rescues can tell you much more about an adult's character, so check back.
