Size. The Royal Kennel Club recognises two sizes in the UK. The breed standards give an ideal weight of 9 to 12 kg for the standard size and 4.5 kg for a miniature, with a desired maximum of 5 kg. Both sizes come in smooth-haired, long-haired and wirehaired coats, and all six varieties share the same breed standard.

They can. Dogs Trust says Dachshunds are predisposed to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), similar to a slipped disc in humans, which can cause weakness, loss of balance and even paralysis. The Royal Kennel Club asks breeders to screen their dogs' spines under its IVDD screening scheme. Ask the rescue whether this dog has had any back problems, and see your vet promptly if you notice weakness or wobbliness.

It depends on the dog, not the breed. Today the rescues mark 5 of the 7 Dachshunds listed in and around Llanelli as able to live with children. Where a profile says nothing, ask the rescue what age of children the dog could live with.
