What Whippets are like to live with

The Whippet is a sighthound, a dog that hunts by sight. The Royal Kennel Club describes it as a "small, speedy sighthound traditionally used for racing", says it originated from the Greyhound, and says Whippet racing became popular in the mining areas of the North and Wales, as well as in London and the Midlands. At home it is a different dog: The Royal Kennel Club says that "as a family companion, the Whippet is gentle and affectionate and enjoys the comforts of domestic life".

How much exercise does a Whippet need?

Up to an hour a day, according to The Royal Kennel Club. PDSA says a minimum of an hour, split into a couple of walks, with a chance for a really good run off lead in a secure area. A rescue dog's needs can differ, so ask the rescue about this one.

Do Whippets shed?

Yes, but not much. The Royal Kennel Club says the Whippet's short coat sheds and needs grooming about once a week, and Dogs Trust describes "short length with low shedding".

Are Whippets good with children?

Can I get a free Whippet to a good home in Derbyshire Dales, or one under £500?

Of the 2 Whippets listed in and around Derbyshire Dales today, each shows its rescue's fee on the profile; the nearest rescue is Thornberry Animal Sanctuary at North Anston, about 22 miles away. Many rescue fees are under £500: Dogs Trust charges £300, and Blue Cross from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped by 8 weeks old, and in England, Wales and Scotland a dog can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, so ask to see the microchip details.
