What Labradors are like to live with

The Royal Kennel Club calls the Labrador the "most popular of all pedigree breeds", and says that popularity comes from its "versatility as family companion, service dog, guide dog as well as a working gundog". It says the breed's roots are in Newfoundland, where dogs helped fishermen retrieve nets and lines; dogs brought back to England had their retrieving skills recognised by the sporting gentry, and the first breed club was founded in 1916.

As of 8 November 2026, 8 Labradors are listed for adoption in and around Derby on LocalPetFinder, from Doggy Dens UK Rescue, Ashbourne Animal Welfare and Yappy Ever After Dog Rescue. That is 1 in Derby itself and 7 with rescues reachable from Derby, each shown with its town and distance. Each profile links to the rescue, and you apply to adopt with them directly.

Which rescues near Derby have Labradors right now, and how old are they?

As of 8 November 2026, Doggy Dens UK Rescue (at Cuckney, about 25 miles away): 4, Yappy Ever After Dog Rescue (in Derby): 2 and Ashbourne Animal Welfare (at Ashbourne, about 11 miles away): 2. By age, that is 2 puppies, 4 adult dogs and 2 older dogs. The newest was added on 4 November 2026. Each profile links to the rescue, which handles the adoption.

Where can I adopt a Labrador in Derby?

With the rescue that has the dog. Today the Labradors on this page are with Doggy Dens UK Rescue (4), Ashbourne Animal Welfare (2) and Yappy Ever After Dog Rescue (2). Open a profile and apply to that rescue: each one runs its own application, home check and adoption fee. We don't rehome animals ourselves.

How much exercise does a Labrador need?

More than two hours a day, according to The Royal Kennel Club. It lists the breed as suited to a large house with a large garden. Dogs Trust calls Labradors typically high-energy. Ask the rescue how much this dog needs, as age and health make a difference.

Do Labradors shed?

Yes. The Royal Kennel Club lists the Labrador as a breed that sheds, with a short coat that needs grooming about once a week, and Dogs Trust rates its shedding as heavy.

Are Labradors good with children?

It depends on the dog, not the breed. Today the rescues mark 4 of the 8 Labradors listed in and around Derby as able to live with children. Where a profile says nothing, ask the rescue what age of children the dog could live with.

How much does it cost to adopt a Labrador in Derby?

The Labradors listed in and around Derby today are with Doggy Dens UK Rescue at Cuckney, about 25 miles away (4), Yappy Ever After Dog Rescue in Derby (2) and Ashbourne Animal Welfare at Ashbourne, about 11 miles away (2); each profile shows that rescue's fee. Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

Are there Labrador puppies for sale in Derby?

No. We don't list animals for sale. Every Labrador on this page is with a rescue or rehoming centre. The 8 Labradors listed in and around Derby today are with Doggy Dens UK Rescue at Cuckney, about 25 miles away (4), Yappy Ever After Dog Rescue in Derby (2) and Ashbourne Animal Welfare at Ashbourne, about 11 miles away (2), and each rescue shows its own fee on the profile. For comparison, Dogs Trust £300, and Blue Cross puppies under six months start from £525. If you searched "labrador puppies for sale Derby", the Labradors here are the rescue route: you apply to the rescue and pay its adoption fee, not a sale price. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Can I get a free Labrador to a good home in Derby, or one under £500?

Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Of the 8 Labradors listed in and around Derby today, each shows its rescue's fee on the profile; the nearest rescue is Yappy Ever After Dog Rescue in Derby. Many rescue fees are under £500: Dogs Trust charges £300, and Blue Cross from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped by 8 weeks old, and in England, Wales and Scotland a dog can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, so ask to see the microchip details.

Are there Labrador puppies for adoption in Derby?

Yes: 2 puppies of the 8 listed in and around Derby are 12 months or under by their listed age.

Are there older Labradors for adoption in Derby?

Yes: 2 of the 8 listed in and around Derby are aged 7 or over by their listed age. Some rescues charge less for older dogs: Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over.
