About Tess

Tess is now ready for adoption. Here is her foster-mum’s write-up… 🐾 What can I say about 5-year-old Tess … aka Mary Poppins because she is practically perfect in every way! Tess sleeps downstairs all night with no problem in a bed, not crated. I have always left doors open for foster dogs so they have a choice of where to sleep in the house upstairs or down and she chose the snug. She goes from 9:30pm to 6am with no accidents & can be left for a couple of hours with no issues at all . She is so friendly with everyone who comes into the house. I make her sit & wait for her meals because she can get really over-excited if you don’t help her to calm down a little (It’s just the equivalent to how I act with a tub of Heroes). She is so food-oriented that she’s ridiculously easy to train. Her teeth chatter when she knows it’s food time and it makes me laugh so much. Due to an unknown allergy, is on Atopese 16mg per day and also is on a skin sensitive food. The vet recommended she stay on it & unfortunately no treats / food other than her kibble to try & eliminate any potential causes. But she’s so obsessed with food she thinks kibble is a treat anyway. I walk her on a figure-of-8 lead & she walks wonderfully well. When she arrived, she had a body harness & did pull badly, but her first walk on a figure-of-8 lead stopped the pulling immediately. After an off-lead dog had attacked her before coming into rescue, she is wary of other dogs on the street – especially if they are off lead & can be vocal. But if you hold a single piece of kibble to her nose, she is instantly hypnotised & can only see kibble (again, a bit like me with chocolate). You do have to be alert on walks, however, to ensure she isn’t caught off guard though as she tries to get away from them pulling backwards. She’s been to the pub several times & has been no bother at all. We’ve been on long walks & she’s just as bouncy after a few hours as she was at the start . I have small children visit & she’s amazing with them, but because she’s so excited by food I won’t let them feed her as she is a little grabby. After just a couple of weeks of training, it’s already getting much better though. My neighbours all have Labradors who have walked with us round the estate and once she realises they’re friendly, she loves to play with them – it’s just the initial meeting dogs when you’re out & about that scares her a little. So I think Tess would do well as an only dog. She will play fetch forever & although I haven’t tested her recall out & about – in the garden it’s perfect 👌🏻 Tess loves nothing better than tummy rubs & lying right up against the log burner. Now I wouldn’t say a log burner was a necessity for adopters, but if she could write a list, I know it would look like this! 1. Food 2. Tummy rubs 3. Food 4. Log burner 5. Food 6. Walks 7. Food 🐾 Tess is such a lovely girl and someone is going to be so lucky to have such a special little lady in their life. Anyone applying to adopt her must take into account the extra cost of her Atopease (which can be sourced from a vet or online with a prescription). Atopease is an expensive medication and whilst I believe it is always possible to find a way to eventually wean dogs off allergy medication, there is also a goof chance that she will be on it lifelong. Please do some research into prices before applying for Tess. Tess is in foster in Derby.
