About Border Collies in Leeds

When we checked on 29 October 2026, eight Border Collies were listed near Leeds: seven with The Freedom Of Spirit Trust For Border Collies at Golcar Farm, Bingley, about 12 miles from Leeds, and one with Aireworth Dogs in Need at Keighley, about 15 miles from Leeds. Six were adults and two had no age given.

The Freedom Of Spirit Trust has no open kennel, so every visit is by appointment. Its adoption form asks the ages of children who live with or visit you, any holiday already booked and how long a dog would be left alone; after that you may spend a day or two with the dog you choose. Its conditions say it cannot home to people who work full time, and they rule out harnesses and haltis, a dog left alone in the garden or with a dog flap, and letting the dog off the lead or long line in its first two months. It says few of its dogs can go to homes with children, and dogs that need regular help from its team cannot be homed a long way off.

Aireworth Dogs in Need has no kennels; its dogs live in foster homes in and around Keighley. It asks you to be home checked before you apply for a dog: check that it covers your postcode, then send its home check questionnaire with the photos it asks for.

What Border Collies are like to live with

The Border Collie takes its name from the border regions of England, Scotland and Wales, where it worked sheep in the hills. The Royal Kennel Club calls it a "naturally active and intelligent herding specialist and all-round worker", says it is still seen working sheep and cattle, and says it "needs to be engaged to lead a fulfilled life".

By age, that is 5 adult dogs and 1 older dog. The newest was added on 4 November 2026. Each profile links to the rescue, which handles the adoption.

Where can I adopt a Border Collie in York?

With the rescue that has the dog. Today the Border Collies on this page are with The Freedom Of Spirit Trust For Border Collies (4), Aireworth Dogs in Need (1) and Hull Animal Welfare Trust (1). Open a profile and apply to that rescue: each one runs its own application, home check and adoption fee. We don't rehome animals ourselves.

How much exercise does a Border Collie need?

More than two hours a day, according to The Royal Kennel Club, which says the breed needs to be engaged to lead a fulfilled life. Dogs Trust adds training and daily enrichment to daily walks and play. Ask the rescue how much this dog needs, as age and health make a difference.

Can a Border Collie live in a flat?

The Royal Kennel Club says a small house can be enough, but pairs it with a large garden and more than two hours of exercise a day. It does not list a flat as suitable, so ask the rescue whether this particular dog could settle in one.

Are Border Collies good with children?

It depends on the dog, not the breed. Most of the 6 Border Collies listed in and around York today don't say either way, so ask the rescue. Where a profile says nothing, ask the rescue what age of children the dog could live with.

How much does it cost to adopt a Border Collie in York?

The Border Collies listed in and around York today are with The Freedom Of Spirit Trust For Border Collies at Bingley, about 32 miles away (4), Hull Animal Welfare Trust at South Cave, about 24 miles away (1) and Aireworth Dogs in Need at Keighley, about 34 miles away (1); each profile shows that rescue's fee. Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

Are there Border Collie puppies for sale in York?

No. We don't list animals for sale. Every Border Collie on this page is with a rescue or rehoming centre. The 6 Border Collies listed in and around York today are with The Freedom Of Spirit Trust For Border Collies at Bingley, about 32 miles away (4), Hull Animal Welfare Trust at South Cave, about 24 miles away (1) and Aireworth Dogs in Need at Keighley, about 34 miles away (1), and each rescue shows its own fee on the profile. For comparison, Dogs Trust £300, and Blue Cross puppies under six months start from £525. If you searched "border collie puppies for sale York", the Border Collies here are the rescue route: you apply to the rescue and pay its adoption fee, not a sale price. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Can I get a free Border Collie to a good home in York, or one under £500?

Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Of the 6 Border Collies listed in and around York today, each shows its rescue's fee on the profile; the nearest rescue is Hull Animal Welfare Trust at South Cave, about 24 miles away. Many rescue fees are under £500: Dogs Trust charges £300, and Blue Cross from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped by 8 weeks old, and in England, Wales and Scotland a dog can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, so ask to see the microchip details.

Are there Border Collie puppies for adoption in York?

Not right now: none of the 6 listed in and around York is under a year old by its listed age. Puppies do get listed, so check back or look at the adults, whose rescues can tell you much more about their character.

Are there older Border Collies for adoption in York?

Yes: 1 of the 6 listed in and around York is aged 7 or over by their listed age. Some rescues charge less for older dogs: Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over.
