When we checked on 29 October 2026, one Border Collie was listed near Birmingham, at Paws A While Shelter in Alrewas, Staffordshire, about 18 miles from Birmingham. Its home page describes it as a small, self-funded dog rescue. You register interest on its application form, and if you look suitable its behavioural consultant will contact you to talk the dog through before a meet and greet, by appointment; you will only hear back if you are successful. Every adoption begins with a required three week foster to adopt programme, during which the consultant works with you. It asks £350 for a puppy up to six months, £300 for a dog from six months to nine years and £200 for a dog of nine or over, and each dog leaves with five weeks of insurance.
About 21 miles from Birmingham, Border Collie Trust GB keeps every collie it rescues at its centre at Colton, near Rugeley, and takes adopters from across the UK. Fill in its Application To Adopt form before asking to visit; meetings are by appointment once its adoption team has been in touch, and it asks everyone in the household to meet the dog at the centre. The fee is shown on each dog's own page. Its questions and answers ask tenants to bring written permission from their landlord and every adopter to show proof of address, such as a driving licence or utility bill. Since November 2025 it has offered £100 towards neutering when a dog could not be neutered before it left.

The Border Collie takes its name from the border regions of England, Scotland and Wales, where it worked sheep in the hills. The Royal Kennel Club calls it a "naturally active and intelligent herding specialist and all-round worker", says it is still seen working sheep and cattle, and says it "needs to be engaged to lead a fulfilled life".

More than two hours a day, according to The Royal Kennel Club, which says the breed needs to be engaged to lead a fulfilled life. Dogs Trust adds training and daily enrichment to daily walks and play. Ask the rescue how much this dog needs, as age and health make a difference.
The Royal Kennel Club says a small house can be enough, but pairs it with a large garden and more than two hours of exercise a day. It does not list a flat as suitable, so ask the rescue whether this particular dog could settle in one.
It depends on the dog, not the breed. Most of the 1 Border Collie listed in and around Wolverhampton today don't say either way, so ask the rescue. Where a profile says nothing, ask the rescue what age of children the dog could live with.
