What Maine Coons are like to live with
The Maine Coon is a large, semi-longhaired cat. The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF), which registers pedigree cats in the UK, calls it "the largest domestic breed to be recognised by GCCF", and says it ranks third in GCCF registrations. It says the breed is gentle and friendly as well as playful, often known as "the gentle giant", and that it is slow to mature, taking up to four years.
Sources (checked 30 September 2026)
- GCCF: Maine Coon (Lifespan from the GCCF breed characteristics box (its health section says 10 to 15 years). Lifetime cost from the PDSA Maine Coon page, which counts essentials such as food, litter, preventive treatment and insurance, not purchase or vet treatment. Both in sources.)

Maine Coons in West Lindsey: your questions
Tap a question to expand
How many rescue Maine Coons are available for adoption in West Lindsey?
As of 8 November 2026, no Maine Coons are listed for adoption in and around West Lindsey on LocalPetFinder. Rescues add animals all the time, so this page fills as they list them.
Do Maine Coons need a lot of grooming?
Yes, more than most short-haired cats. The GCCF says their long, thick coat needs regular grooming to prevent knots and mats, with extra care in spring when they can shed heavily. PDSA recommends daily attention.
How big do Maine Coons get?
Big. The GCCF calls the Maine Coon the largest domestic breed it recognises, gives a size range of 10 to 20 lb, and says males can weigh up to 18 to 20 lb. It says they take up to four years to reach full size.
How much does it cost to adopt a Maine Coon in West Lindsey?
Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Cats Protection says you can expect to pay £80 to £120 on average for an adult cat and £100 to £120 for a kitten, varying between its branches, and Blue Cross fees start from £150 for cats aged 4 months to 7 years. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
Are there Maine Coon kittens for sale in West Lindsey?
No. We don't list animals for sale. Every Maine Coon on this page is with a rescue or rehoming centre. Rescues rehome animals rather than selling them, usually for an adoption fee: for example, Cats Protection says £80 to £120 on average for an adult cat and £100 to £120 for a kitten. The fee usually goes towards vet work already done, such as neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations. If you searched "maine coon kittens for sale West Lindsey", the Maine Coons here are the rescue route: you apply to the rescue and pay its adoption fee, not a sale price. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that kittens under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
Can I get a free Maine Coon to a good home in West Lindsey, or one under £100?
Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. At the large cat charities, fees for one cat are under £200: Cats Protection says £80 to £120 on average for an adult cat and £100 to £120 for a kitten, and Blue Cross fees start from £150 for cats aged 4 months to 7 years. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. In England, cats must be microchipped before they are 20 weeks old, so ask to see the microchip details.
Are there Maine Coon kittens for adoption in West Lindsey?
Not right now: no Maine Coons are listed in and around West Lindsey today, so there are no kittens either. Kittens do get listed, and rescues can tell you much more about an adult's character, so check back.
