What Norwegian Forest Cats are like to live with

The Norwegian Forest Cat is a large, semi-longhaired cat. The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF), which registers pedigree cats in the UK, says it is "gentle and friendly, and enjoys being part of a family environment, but is not demanding of attention." It adds that Norwegians can be reserved with strangers, have a quiet voice "except when it comes to dinnertime", and are slow to mature, taking around four to five years to be fully grown. It says they are among the top 10 breeds registered with the GCCF.

Norwegian Forest Cats in Wakefield: your questions

Tap a question to expand

How many rescue Norwegian Forest Cats are available for adoption in Wakefield?

As of 8 November 2026, no Norwegian Forest Cats are listed for adoption in and around Wakefield on LocalPetFinder. Rescues add animals all the time, so this page fills as they list them.

Is a Norwegian Forest Cat high maintenance?

Not especially, for a long-coated cat. The GCCF calls the breed fairly low maintenance, though the thicker winter coat needs more attention and the spring moult needs extra combing to stop knots. PDSA says they should not need daily care like some long-haired breeds.

Are Norwegian Forest Cats lap cats?

Not usually. PDSA says they are not known to be real lap cats and are more likely to be found up high. The GCCF says they enjoy family life but are not demanding of attention. Ask the rescue about this cat.

How much does it cost to adopt a Norwegian Forest Cat in Wakefield?

Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Cats Protection says you can expect to pay £80 to £120 on average for an adult cat and £100 to £120 for a kitten, varying between its branches, and Blue Cross fees start from £150 for cats aged 4 months to 7 years. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

Are there Norwegian Forest kittens for sale in Wakefield?

No. We don't list animals for sale. Every Norwegian Forest Cat on this page is with a rescue or rehoming centre. Rescues rehome animals rather than selling them, usually for an adoption fee: for example, Cats Protection says £80 to £120 on average for an adult cat and £100 to £120 for a kitten. The fee usually goes towards vet work already done, such as neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations. If you searched "norwegian forest kittens for sale Wakefield", the Norwegian Forest Cats here are the rescue route: you apply to the rescue and pay its adoption fee, not a sale price. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that kittens under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Can I get a free Norwegian Forest Cat to a good home in Wakefield, or one under £100?

Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. At the large cat charities, fees for one cat are under £200: Cats Protection says £80 to £120 on average for an adult cat and £100 to £120 for a kitten, and Blue Cross fees start from £150 for cats aged 4 months to 7 years. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. In England, cats must be microchipped before they are 20 weeks old, so ask to see the microchip details.

Are there Norwegian Forest Cat kittens for adoption in Wakefield?

Not right now: no Norwegian Forest Cats are listed in and around Wakefield today, so there are no kittens either. Kittens do get listed, and rescues can tell you much more about an adult's character, so check back.
