What Poodles are like to live with
The Royal Kennel Club calls the Poodle a "glamorous, intelligent breed descended from European duck hunters". It says the breed originates in Germany as a water retriever, and that the famous trim is "traditional and very practical": the hindquarters were clipped to help the dog swim, and bands of hair were left on the joints and tail tip for protection from cold.

Breed descriptions are general. Every rescue animal is an individual, so the rescue's own assessment of the animal comes first.

Which rescues near St. Helens have Poodles right now, and how old are they?

Where can I adopt a Poodle in St. Helens?
With the rescue that has the dog. Today the Poodles on this page are with Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary (1) and Freshfields Animal Rescue (1). Open a profile and apply to that rescue: each one runs its own application, home check and adoption fee. We don't rehome animals ourselves.
Do Poodles shed?
The Royal Kennel Club lists all three Poodle sizes as not shedding, and Dogs Trust describes low shedding, but the coat needs grooming every day and professional clipping from time to time. Doodle Trust says no dog is allergy friendly, so if someone at home has allergies, ask the rescue whether you can spend time with the dog first.
What is the difference between Standard, Miniature and Toy Poodles?
Size. The Royal Kennel Club recognises three varieties that share one breed standard: the Standard is over 38 cm at the shoulder, the Miniature between 28 and 38 cm, and the Toy under 28 cm. All three need up to an hour of exercise a day and grooming every day.
Are Poodles good with children?
It depends on the dog, not the breed. None of the 2 Poodles listed in and around St. Helens is marked by its rescue as able to live with children today. Where a profile says nothing, ask the rescue what age of children the dog could live with.
How much does it cost to adopt a Poodle in St. Helens?

Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
Are there Poodle puppies for sale in St. Helens?

The 2 Poodles listed in and around St. Helens today are with Freshfields Animal Rescue at Ince Blundell, about 14 miles away (1) and Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary at Ramsbottom, about 23 miles away (1), and each rescue shows its own fee on the profile. If you searched "poodle puppies for sale St. Helens", the Poodles here are the rescue route: you apply to the rescue and pay its adoption fee, not a sale price. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
Can I get a free Poodle to a good home in St. Helens, or one under £500?
Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Of the 2 Poodles listed in and around St. Helens today, each shows its rescue's fee on the profile; the nearest rescue is Freshfields Animal Rescue at Ince Blundell, about 14 miles away. Many rescue fees are under £500: Dogs Trust charges £300, and Blue Cross from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped by 8 weeks old, and in England, Wales and Scotland a dog can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, so ask to see the microchip details.
