Adopting a Whippet in Sheffield: rescues, rules and costs
People around Sheffield search for a Whippet rescue in Yorkshire, but there isn't one with its own site that we could find. Here is how the two national Whippet charities work for Sheffield homes, where lurchers fit in, what adopting costs against buying, and the health questions to ask.

The short answer
To adopt a Whippet in Sheffield, apply to JR Whippet Rescue CIO, a UK-wide charity that rehomes Whippets from foster homes and usually brings the dog to you, and watch our Sheffield Whippet page and lurcher page for sighthounds at the rescues around the city. The charity rarely places dogs in built-up cities, so a home on the quieter edge of Sheffield with a securely fenced garden stands the best chance. You pay an adoption fee or donation, never a sale price.
- Rescue adoption fees
- Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
- Buying a puppy
- Blue Cross says a puppy can cost £400 to £3,000 to buy, before food, insurance or the vet. We have found no reliable Whippet price, so we don't give one.
- The Whippet charity
- JR Whippet Rescue CIO asks a recommended donation by age, but its pages give two different sets of figures, so ask it when you apply.
- Rescues around Sheffield
- RAIN Rescue generally charges £250 to £350, shown on each dog's profile, Cliffe Kennels & Rescue from £380, and Jerry Green Dog Rescue £385 for a dog over 20 weeks.
- A lifetime with a Whippet
- PDSA classes the Whippet as a medium dog and gives a medium dog's minimum lifetime cost as £9,000 to £14,000 (2024 figures that include insurance but not vet bills if the dog becomes ill).

Where to adopt a Whippet near Sheffield and across Yorkshire
The count under the short answer is live: it shows every Whippet and Whippet cross listed with us in Sheffield and within about 25 miles, each linked to its rescue. On 21 October 2026 the only dog on our Sheffield Whippet page was a small, whippet-sized lurcher at Thornberry Animal Sanctuary in North Anston, about 10 miles east of the city. A lurcher is a sighthound such as a Greyhound or Whippet crossed with another breed, Dogs Trust explains, and our lurcher page had more choice that day.
JR Whippet Rescue CIO
Working through foster carers and volunteers rather than a base or kennels, this registered charity rehomes Whippets throughout the UK and says it secures the futures of 100 or more each year. It rehomes only within mainland UK and in most cases brings the dog to your home, so a Sheffield adopter doesn't need to drive across the country to collect one.
Applications are made online, and its assessor replies within 72 hours. If you are approved, your application stays on its waiting list for 6 months, a home check can happen while you wait, and it asks for video of your fencing before that visit. Meeting the dog first is rarely possible, so it sends photos and details and offers a "foster with view to adopt" trial before the adoption is final.
Just Whippets Rescue
A second national charity, Just Whippets Rescue homes dogs only to people on its waiting list, joined after an application and a home check, won't rehome to anyone working full time, asks a £400 administration fee, and on 21 October 2026 its dogs page had no Whippets listed.
Greyhounds and lurchers near Sheffield
If a sighthound appeals more than the exact breed, Sheffield is better placed for greyhounds: our Sheffield greyhound guide covers the greyhound charity with kennels at Wortley and the lurchers that come through RAIN Rescue, Jerry Green Dog Rescue, Cliffe Kennels & Rescue and Thornberry.
Which Sheffield homes JR Whippet Rescue CIO can place a dog with
Its FAQs are worth reading before you apply, because several answers decide whether a Sheffield address will work:
- City streets. It says it is rarely able to home Whippets into built-up cities, because most rescue Whippets will not cope there. A house on the edge of the city is a better fit than a flat in the centre.
- Gardens and fences. It rarely rehomes to flats without gardens and prefers 6 foot fencing, because a nervous Whippet can clear a low fence. It considers good stock fencing case by case, but not for a nervous dog.
- Cats and livestock. On average it has only up to 5 Whippets a year classed as cat friendly. It says many Whippets see small animals and livestock as prey, worth knowing if your walks pass fields of sheep.
- Children. It places a Whippet with children only if the dog has lived happily with children before, or is a young puppy brought up alongside them.
Why Whippets need new homes
Since lockdown, JR Whippet Rescue CIO says, the number of Whippets needing its help has risen significantly. Among the reasons it lists are reactivity and separation anxiety, relationship breakdowns, a new baby, owners who didn't realise the commitment, illness or death, financial hardship, and Whippets not coping with cities or homes without gardens. Most of its dogs need behavioural support of some kind, it adds, usually for lead reactivity (lunging or barking at dogs or people while on the lead) or separation anxiety, and it offers adopters training help.
Adopting or buying a Whippet: what you pay
JR Whippet Rescue CIO pays for neutering if the dog isn't already done, offers 5 weeks' free Agria insurance if you opt in, and promises lifetime support and to take the dog back at any point.
A bought puppy should already be microchipped by its breeder, but PDSA counts its first vaccinations, worming and neutering among your setting-up costs, on top of the £400 to £3,000 Blue Cross gives for the puppy.
Whippet health: what to ask the rescue
The Royal Kennel Club offers no breed-specific DNA testing package for the Whippet and points breeders to genetic diversity and a breed club health scheme instead. Ask what the charity's or rescue's vet has found. UK sources flag these conditions:
- Eyes and heart. Among the conditions PDSA says Whippets may develop are progressive retinal atrophy (sight that fades over months or years), mitral valve disease (a weakened heart valve) and immune-mediated problems, where the body reacts against its own cells.
- Skin and bones. PDSA warns that Whippets are prone to cuts from thorns and twigs and can damage their bones running on uneven ground, so choose off-lead spots with care.
- Cold and comfort. PDSA says a Whippet has so little body fat that it may need a coat over winter, and its prominent bones make thick, soft bedding worth having to avoid sores.
Living with a Whippet in Sheffield
The Royal Kennel Club suggests up to an hour of exercise a day and says a small house with a small or medium garden is enough. PDSA calls a secure garden a must and wants a Whippet to get a good off-lead run in a secure area; anywhere else, hold the lead firmly, because its prey drive is high.
Time alone is the harder question. PDSA says Whippets dislike being left alone and recommends one only if someone will be around with it all day. Tell each charity honestly how your week looks.
If you've been searching "Whippet puppies for sale Sheffield"
A rescue Whippet is adopted rather than bought: the charity matches a dog to your home after you apply, and what you pay is its fee or donation. JR Whippet Rescue CIO's form has a preferred age range, but the charity asks you to keep an open mind, as the best match may be older than you had in mind. Every dog on our Sheffield Whippet page is adopted the same way.
If you decide to buy, Dogs Trust suggests asking your vet about a pre-purchase consultation on likely health problems and rough costs, and The Royal Kennel Club runs a "Find a puppy" service. Report a suspected scam advert to Report Fraud, which replaced Action Fraud.
The law in England
Microchipping and change of keeper
In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
Lucy's Law: buying a puppy
In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
Banned dog types
In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
XL Bully dogs
In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).
Questions

Is there a Whippet rescue in Yorkshire or near Sheffield?
Not one with its own site that we could find. The two Whippet charities that take Sheffield adopters are national: JR Whippet Rescue CIO rehomes across mainland UK from foster homes and usually brings the dog to you, and a second national charity keeps a waiting list. Our Sheffield Whippet and lurcher pages show the sighthounds listed with the rescues around the city today.
Is it cheaper to adopt a Whippet than to buy a puppy?
Usually, yes. RAIN Rescue generally charges £250 to £350 and Jerry Green Dog Rescue £385 for a dog over 20 weeks, while Blue Cross puts the cost of buying a puppy at £400 to £3,000. JR Whippet Rescue CIO asks a donation by age and pays for neutering if it isn't done.
Can I get a Whippet for free, or for £250 or less, near Sheffield?
Not free from a rescue, but £250 is at the low end of what RAIN Rescue generally charges for a dog, if it has a Whippet or a whippet-sized lurcher. No reputable rescue gives a dog away: each asks a fee or donation to help pay for vet work. A "free" Whippet in an advert comes from a private owner with no rescue checks behind it, so meet the dog where it lives and check its microchip details.
Should I adopt a Whippet puppy, an adult or an older dog?
Stay open to an adult or an older dog. JR Whippet Rescue CIO asks for a preferred age range on its form, but puts how well a dog suits your home ahead of its age. The Royal Kennel Club gives the lifespan as over 12 years, so an older Whippet can still have years ahead, and its character is already known.
Why do Whippets end up in rescue?
More Whippets have needed rescue since lockdown, JR Whippet Rescue CIO says. Its reasons include reactivity, separation anxiety, relationship breakdowns, a new baby, owners who underestimated the commitment, illness, money worries and dogs that could not cope with city life.
What health problems should I ask about with a rescue Whippet?
Eyes, heart and skin. PDSA's Whippet page names an eye disease (progressive retinal atrophy), a heart valve disease (mitral valve disease) and immune-mediated problems, and warns about cuts from thorns and bone damage on uneven ground. Ask what the vet has found and whether the dog is insured.
Can I adopt a Whippet if I live in a flat in Sheffield city centre?
It is hard. JR Whippet Rescue CIO is rarely able to home Whippets into built-up cities, rarely rehomes to flats without gardens, and prefers 6 foot fencing. PDSA calls a secure garden a must. A house on the quieter edge of the city has a much better chance.
Can a rescue Whippet live with a cat?
Not often. JR Whippet Rescue CIO says it has only up to 5 cat-friendly Whippets a year on average, and only places one with cats if it has lived with cats before or is a young puppy raised alongside them.
What is the difference between a Whippet and a lurcher?
A Whippet is a breed; a lurcher is a type. Dogs Trust describes a lurcher as a sighthound, such as a Greyhound, Whippet or Saluki, crossed with another breed. On 21 October 2026 our Sheffield lurcher page had more dogs than the Whippet page, so it is worth watching alongside it.
