Adopting a Whippet near Exeter: rescues, rules and costs

"Whippet rescue Devon" is one of the most searched breed rescue phrases in the county, and the answer starts close to Exeter: one national Whippet charity runs its administration near the city. Here is how the Whippet charities work for Devon homes, where greyhounds and lurchers come in, what you pay against buying, and the health questions to ask.

The short answer

To adopt a Whippet near Exeter, apply to one of the two national Whippet charities: Just Whippets Rescue, whose day to day administration is near Exeter and whose dogs wait with their owners or in foster homes around the country, or JR Whippet Rescue CIO, which rehomes across mainland UK and usually brings the dog to you. For greyhounds, Greyhound Trust Honiton, about 15 miles east, homes across Devon. Watch our Exeter Whippet page and lurcher page for sighthounds at the rescues we list.

Rescue adoption fees
Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
The Whippet charities
Just Whippets Rescue asks a non-refundable administration fee of £400. JR Whippet Rescue CIO asks a recommended donation by age, but its pages give two different sets of figures, so ask it when you apply.
Rescues around Exeter
ARC Animal Rescue Centre sets each dog's donation by age and breed, from £350, and Animals in Distress (Torbay & Westcountry) asks £325 for a dog of 6 months or older.
Buying a puppy
Blue Cross says a puppy can cost £400 to £3,000 to buy, before food, insurance or the vet. We have found no reliable Whippet price, so we don't give one.
A lifetime with a Whippet
PDSA classes the Whippet as a medium dog and gives a medium dog's minimum lifetime cost as £9,000 to £14,000 (2024 figures that include insurance but not vet bills if the dog becomes ill).

Where to find a Whippet rescue in Devon

The count under the short answer is live: every Whippet and Whippet cross listed with us in Exeter and within about 25 miles, each linked to its rescue. When we checked on 1 November 2026 there was no Whippet among them; the one sighthound near the city was a lurcher at ARC Animal Rescue Centre, just outside Ottery St Mary, about 10 miles east. So for a Whippet, the two breed charities below are the main route.

Just Whippets Rescue, administered near Exeter

A registered charity that rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes Whippets. It never uses kennels: a dog usually stays with the owner giving it up until a new home is found, and otherwise goes to one of its home-checked foster homes around the country, so it has no rehoming centre. Its day to day administration is near Exeter, which is why it comes up for people searching in Devon, but its dogs can be anywhere, and it homes only within England, Scotland and Wales.

Its process is strict and worth reading before you apply. You fill in its adoption application, a home checker visits to meet everyone in your household and look over your garden (mend any fencing first), and once you pass you join its waiting list: "Rescue dogs will only be offered to homes that are on our waiting list." It asks people not to phone or email about dogs on its site before applying and being home checked. On 1 November 2026 its dogs page said there were no Whippets looking for homes, which is why the waiting list matters.

JR Whippet Rescue CIO

The other national Whippet charity works through foster carers and volunteers with no base or kennels, and says it secures the futures of 100 or more Whippets a year. It rehomes within mainland UK, and in most cases brings the dog to your home, so living in Devon is no barrier.

You apply online and its assessor replies within 72 hours, by phone or email. A successful application stays on its waiting list for 6 months and can be renewed; you may get your home visit while you wait, and it needs video of your fencing before that visit. Meeting the dog first is rarely possible across the UK, so it offers "foster with view to adopt", a settling-in period before the adoption is final.

Greyhounds: Greyhound Trust Honiton

If a sighthound appeals more than the exact breed, greyhounds are easier to find near Exeter. Greyhound Trust Honiton is a branch of the Greyhound Trust in Honiton, about 15 miles east of the city. It homes greyhounds across Devon and into Dorset and Somerset, asks you to contact it for the latest on the dogs in its care, and sees adopters by appointment only. The Greyhound Trust also has a Devon branch near South Molton in North Devon.

The Greyhound Trust's homing process has three steps: contact the branch, visit to meet the hounds (it may suggest bringing a dog you already have), then a home visit, which every adoption needs. Its greyhounds are neutered, vaccinated and microchipped before they go, and come with a collar, lead and muzzle and 4 weeks' free Petplan insurance. It says the process can vary a little between branches, so ask Honiton how it works there, and what it asks as a donation, since the branch page publishes no figure.

Lurchers and Forever Hounds Trust

A lurcher is a sighthound such as a Greyhound or Whippet crossed with another breed, Dogs Trust explains, and many have a Whippet in them. Lurchers turn up at general rescues, so our Exeter lurcher page is worth watching alongside the Whippet page. Forever Hounds Trust, a greyhound and lurcher charity with its office at Chard in Somerset, considers homes without gardens and smaller properties case by case, as well as families and older people. Our Exeter greyhound page shows any greyhounds listed with us.

What the Whippet charities ask of a Devon home

Both charities set rules that decide whether your address will work. Read them before you apply:

  • Time alone. Just Whippets Rescue does not rehome to people working full time and expects a dog not to be left alone for more than 4 hours a day; a lunchtime visit or a dog walker doesn't count, though working from home all day does.
  • Fences. JR Whippet Rescue CIO prefers 6 foot fencing, because a nervous Whippet can clear a low fence. It considers stock fencing case by case, but never for a nervous dog.
  • Town or country. JR Whippet Rescue CIO says it is rarely able to home Whippets into built-up cities, and rarely to flats without gardens. A house with a garden on the edge of Exeter or in an East Devon village is a better fit than a flat in the city centre.
  • Cats and livestock. On average it has only up to 5 Whippets a year classed as cat friendly, and many Whippets see small animals and livestock as prey: worth knowing on Devon walks past sheep.
  • Children. It places a Whippet with children only if the dog has lived with children before, or is a young puppy brought up alongside them.
  • Moving house. Just Whippets Rescue won't rehome a dog to you until you have moved and it has home checked the new house.

Why Whippets end up in rescue

The number of Whippets needing help has risen sharply since lockdown, JR Whippet Rescue CIO says. The reasons it gives include behaviour problems such as reactivity (lunging or barking at dogs or people on the lead), separation anxiety, sleep startle and resource guarding; a new baby; owners who didn't realise the commitment; a lack of basic training; dogs not coping with cities, homes without gardens or children; and unclaimed strays from the pound.

Just Whippets Rescue says many of the dogs it rehomes come from families where they were left for long periods because of work, which is why it won't rehome to full-time workers. Most rescue Whippets need some behavioural support, so be ready to put in time and patience, and perhaps a training class.

Adopting or buying a Whippet: what you pay

Just Whippets Rescue's £400 administration fee is non-refundable, and covers a dog that is microchipped, vaccinated and neutered or comes with a £50 neutering voucher, plus 4 weeks' free Petplan cover. It always takes a dog back if things don't work out, and once you sign its contract the dog's costs are yours. JR Whippet Rescue CIO pays for neutering if the dog isn't already done, offers 5 weeks' free Agria insurance if you opt in, and promises lifetime support.

A bought puppy should already be microchipped by its breeder, but PDSA counts first vaccinations, worming and neutering among your setting-up costs, on top of the £400 to £3,000 Blue Cross gives for buying a puppy.

Whippet health: what to ask the charity

The Royal Kennel Club has no breed-specific DNA testing package for the Whippet, and points breeders to genetic diversity and a breed club health scheme instead. Just Whippets Rescue passes on the previous owner's information, medical conditions included, so ask what is known. UK sources flag these:

  • Eyes and heart. PDSA lists progressive retinal atrophy (sight that fades over months or years), mitral valve disease (a weakened heart valve) and immune-mediated problems, where the body reacts against its own cells, among the conditions Whippets may develop.
  • Skin and bones. PDSA warns that Whippets are prone to cuts from thorns and twigs and can damage their bones running on uneven ground, so pick off-lead spots with care.
  • Cold and comfort. With so little body fat, PDSA says, a Whippet may need a coat in winter, and its prominent bones make thick, soft bedding worth having.

Living with a Whippet around Exeter

The Royal Kennel Club suggests up to an hour of exercise a day and says a small house with a small or medium garden is enough. PDSA calls a secure garden a must and wants a Whippet to get a good off-lead run somewhere secure; anywhere else, hold the lead, because its prey drive is high. Open country and livestock fields around the city call for extra care.

Time alone is the harder question. PDSA says Whippets dislike being left alone and recommends one only if someone will be around with it all day, which matches Just Whippets Rescue's 4 hour rule. Tell each charity honestly how your week looks.

If you've been searching "Whippet puppies for sale in Devon"

A rescue Whippet is adopted, not bought: the charity matches a dog to your home after you apply, and what you pay is its fee or donation. JR Whippet Rescue CIO lets you choose a preferred age range but asks you to stay open-minded, since your best match may be older than you planned. Every dog on our Exeter Whippet page is adopted the same way, through its rescue.

If you decide to buy, Dogs Trust suggests asking your vet about a pre-purchase consultation on likely health problems and rough costs, and The Royal Kennel Club runs a "Find a puppy" service. Blue Cross says to see a puppy with its mother and littermates, and to walk away from excuses about meeting the mother or offers to hand a puppy over somewhere public. Report a suspected scam advert to Report Fraud, which replaced Action Fraud.

The law in England

Microchipping and change of keeper

In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.

Lucy's Law: buying a puppy

In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Banned dog types

In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.

XL Bully dogs

In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).

Questions

Tap a question to expand

Is there a Whippet rescue in Devon or near Exeter?

Just Whippets Rescue has its day to day administration near Exeter, but it has no rehoming centre: its dogs wait with their owners or in foster homes around the country and go to people on its waiting list. JR Whippet Rescue CIO rehomes across mainland UK and usually brings the dog to you. Neither lists its dogs with us, so apply to them directly.

How much does it cost to adopt a Whippet compared with buying one?

Just Whippets Rescue asks a £400 administration fee, which covers microchipping, vaccinations and neutering or a £50 voucher, and 4 weeks' insurance. Blue Cross says a bought puppy can cost £400 to £3,000 before any vet work.

Can I get a Whippet for free, or for £350 or less, near Exeter?

Not free, and probably not from a Whippet charity. The local rescues we list ask £325 (Animals in Distress (Torbay & Westcountry)) or from £350 (ARC Animal Rescue Centre) when they have a Whippet or a lurcher. A "free" Whippet in a private advert has no rescue checks behind it, so meet the dog at home and check its microchip record.

Should I adopt a Whippet puppy, an adult or an older dog?

Keep an open mind. JR Whippet Rescue CIO lets you pick a preferred age range but puts how well a dog suits your home ahead of its age. Whippets often live past 12, so an adult or older dog can still have years ahead, and its character is already known.

Why do Whippets end up in rescue?

More Whippets have needed rescue since lockdown, JR Whippet Rescue CIO says, for reasons including reactivity, separation anxiety, a new baby, owners who underestimated the commitment and dogs that could not cope with city life. Just Whippets Rescue adds that many were left alone for long periods while their owners worked.

What health problems should I ask about with a rescue Whippet?

Eyes, heart and skin. PDSA names progressive retinal atrophy, mitral valve disease and immune-mediated problems, and warns about cuts from thorns and bone damage on rough ground. Ask what the previous owner or fosterer knows, and whether the dog is insured.

Where is the Greyhound Trust near Exeter?

Greyhound Trust Honiton is in Honiton, about 15 miles east, and homes greyhounds across Devon and into Dorset and Somerset; contact it for the full address, as it sees adopters by appointment only. A second branch, Greyhound Trust Devon, is near South Molton in North Devon.

Can I adopt a Whippet if I work full time?

Not from Just Whippets Rescue, which does not rehome to people working full time unless they work from home or take the dog to work, and expects a dog not to be alone for more than 4 hours a day. PDSA also recommends a Whippet only where someone is around all day.

Is an older Whippet or greyhound a good choice for a quieter home?

Often, yes. An older dog's character is known, and Forever Hounds Trust considers older people, smaller properties and homes without gardens case by case for its greyhounds and lurchers. Ask the charity about the dog's health and how much exercise it needs.
