When we checked on 29 October 2026, two Border Collies were listed near Sheffield, one adult and one older dog. One was with Sheffield Dog Rescue at Mosborough Kennels in Sheffield, a volunteer charity that takes in many dogs from the North East Derbyshire dog wardens. It turns away anyone who arrives at the kennels without an appointment, and each dog's page has its own contact form.
The other was with Chesterfield Animal Rescue at Dronfield, about six miles from Sheffield, which is still raising money for a centre of its own and keeps its animals in foster homes, with kennels for emergencies. After you apply on a dog's page it home checks you, and it will not pass a garden with an unsecure fence. The first meeting is in a local park, every family member and pet must come to at least one meet, and then you foster with a view to adopt on a trial of around four weeks (rehoming process). It asks £300 for a dog over ten, £450 for one aged 12 months to ten years and £550 for a puppy under 12 months, with five weeks of insurance.
For a specialist collie rescue, The Freedom Of Spirit Trust For Border Collies at Bingley is about 36 miles from Sheffield. It will not home to people who work full time, and every dog stays on a lead or long line for its first two months in a new home.

The Border Collie takes its name from the border regions of England, Scotland and Wales, where it worked sheep in the hills. The Royal Kennel Club calls it a "naturally active and intelligent herding specialist and all-round worker", says it is still seen working sheep and cattle, and says it "needs to be engaged to lead a fulfilled life".

More than two hours a day, according to The Royal Kennel Club, which says the breed needs to be engaged to lead a fulfilled life. Dogs Trust adds training and daily enrichment to daily walks and play. Ask the rescue how much this dog needs, as age and health make a difference.
The Royal Kennel Club says a small house can be enough, but pairs it with a large garden and more than two hours of exercise a day. It does not list a flat as suitable, so ask the rescue whether this particular dog could settle in one.
It depends on the dog, not the breed. Today the rescues mark 1 of the 2 Border Collies listed in and around Rotherham as able to live with children. Where a profile says nothing, ask the rescue what age of children the dog could live with.

In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Of the 2 Border Collies listed in and around Rotherham today, each shows its rescue's fee on the profile; the nearest rescue is Sheffield Dog Rescue at Sheffield, about 6 miles away. Many rescue fees are under £500: Dogs Trust charges £300, and Blue Cross from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped by 8 weeks old, and in England, Wales and Scotland a dog can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, so ask to see the microchip details.
Not right now: none of the 2 listed in and around Rotherham is under a year old by its listed age. Puppies do get listed, so check back or look at the adults, whose rescues can tell you much more about their character.
