Very often. Cats are built for climbing and keep themselves busy with play, so a flat with a cat tree, a sunny window, scratching posts and daily play is plenty for a contented indoor cat. A garden is not needed, and indoor living keeps a cat away from traffic.

Two is often better indoors, especially if you are out during the day. A bonded or compatible pair keeps each other company, plays together and is less likely to get bored alone. If you adopt two, look for cats their rescue says already get along, or a bonded pair, to skip the introduction work.

No. We don't list animals for sale. Every indoor cat on this page is with a rescue or rehoming centre. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that kittens under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Not here: we only list cats with rescues, so every indoor cat listed here is adopted for the rescue's fee, which usually covers vet work already done. Whether to buy is your choice. Adopting means the rescue can tell you what it knows about the indoor cat's history and health before you apply. If you decide to buy a pedigree kitten, Cats Protection suggests a breeder registered with a breed association such as the GCCF, and seeing the kitten with its mother at home rather than buying from a video or social media advert.

Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. At the large cat charities, fees for one cat are under £200: Cats Protection says £80 to £120 on average for an adult cat and £100 to £120 for a kitten, and Blue Cross fees start from £150 for cats aged 4 months to 7 years. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. In England, cats must be microchipped before they are 20 weeks old, so ask to see the microchip details.
