Slowly, and with the cat always able to get away. Keep them apart at first and let them get used to each other's scent, then try short, supervised meetings with the dog on a lead, rewarding calm behaviour. Give the cat high places and a dog-free room. A dog already known to be cat-friendly makes this far easier, but patience still wins.

It comes down to the individual dog's prey drive and history rather than its breed, though dogs with a very strong chase instinct are a bigger risk. The safest choice is a dog its rescue says lives calmly with cats. Never assume a breed is automatically safe with cats, and always introduce them gradually.

Not here: we only list dogs with rescues, so every dog good with cats listed here is adopted for the rescue's fee, which usually covers vet work already done. Whether to buy is your choice. Adopting means the rescue can tell you what it knows about the dog good with cats's history and health before you apply. If you decide to buy, The Royal Kennel Club runs a Find a Puppy service, and Dogs Trust's breed guides suggest talking to your vet first: they say some practices offer pre-purchase consultations on likely health conditions and rough costs.

Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations.
