What Labradors are like to live with

The Royal Kennel Club calls the Labrador the "most popular of all pedigree breeds", and says that popularity comes from its "versatility as family companion, service dog, guide dog as well as a working gundog". It says the breed's roots are in Newfoundland, where dogs helped fishermen retrieve nets and lines; dogs brought back to England had their retrieving skills recognised by the sporting gentry, and the first breed club was founded in 1916.

Labradors in East Lothian: your questions

Tap a question to expand

How many rescue Labradors are available for adoption in East Lothian?

As of 8 November 2026, no Labradors are listed for adoption in and around East Lothian on LocalPetFinder. Rescues add animals all the time, so this page fills as they list them.

How much exercise does a Labrador need?

More than two hours a day, according to The Royal Kennel Club. It lists the breed as suited to a large house with a large garden. Dogs Trust calls Labradors typically high-energy. Ask the rescue how much this dog needs, as age and health make a difference.

Do Labradors shed?

Yes. The Royal Kennel Club lists the Labrador as a breed that sheds, with a short coat that needs grooming about once a week, and Dogs Trust rates its shedding as heavy.

How much does it cost to adopt a Labrador in East Lothian?

Each rescue sets its own adoption fee, and Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

Are there Labrador puppies for sale in East Lothian?

No. We don't list animals for sale. Every Labrador on this page is with a rescue or rehoming centre. Rescues rehome animals rather than selling them, usually for an adoption fee: for example, Dogs Trust £300. The fee usually goes towards vet work already done, such as neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations. If you searched "labrador puppies for sale East Lothian", the Labradors here are the rescue route: you apply to the rescue and pay its adoption fee, not a sale price. In Scotland, Lucy's Law has banned the third-party sale of puppies under six months since 1 September 2021.

Can I get a free Labrador to a good home in East Lothian, or one under £500?

Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. Many rescue fees are under £500: Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped by 8 weeks old, and in England, Wales and Scotland a dog can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, so ask to see the microchip details.

Are there Labrador puppies for adoption in East Lothian?

Not right now: no Labradors are listed in and around East Lothian today, so there are no puppies either. Puppies do get listed, and rescues can tell you much more about an adult's character, so check back.
