What Birmans are like to live with

The Birman is a pointed cat with blue eyes and four white feet. The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF), which registers pedigree cats in the UK, calls it "an incredibly gentle, loving cat" and says the breed is best known for its temperament: Birmans adore being around people and often follow them from room to room. It describes them as "playful & affectionate", and says they are in the top 10 breeds registered with the GCCF.

Birmans in Buckinghamshire: your questions

Tap a question to expand

How many rescue Birmans are available for adoption in Buckinghamshire?

As of 8 November 2026, no Birmans are listed for adoption in and around Buckinghamshire on LocalPetFinder. Rescues add animals all the time, so this page fills as they list them.

Do Birman cats need a lot of grooming?

Less than you might expect for a long coat. The GCCF says the Birman's silky coat does not mat easily and should be combed weekly, and PDSA suggests twice a week, with daily combing in spring when the winter coat sheds.

Are Birman cats lap cats?

Often. PDSA says Birmans will happily sit on your lap, and the GCCF says they adore being around people and often follow them from room to room. Ask the rescue how this cat likes to be handled.

How much does it cost to adopt a Birman in Buckinghamshire?

Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Cats Protection says you can expect to pay £80 to £120 on average for an adult cat and £100 to £120 for a kitten, varying between its branches, and Blue Cross fees start from £150 for cats aged 4 months to 7 years. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

Are there Birman kittens for sale in Buckinghamshire?

No. We don't list animals for sale. Every Birman on this page is with a rescue or rehoming centre. Rescues rehome animals rather than selling them, usually for an adoption fee: for example, Cats Protection says £80 to £120 on average for an adult cat and £100 to £120 for a kitten. The fee usually goes towards vet work already done, such as neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations. If you searched "birman kittens for sale Buckinghamshire", the Birmans here are the rescue route: you apply to the rescue and pay its adoption fee, not a sale price. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that kittens under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Can I get a free Birman to a good home in Buckinghamshire, or one under £100?

Usually not. UK rescues normally ask for an adoption fee, which pays towards neutering, microchipping and vaccinations. At the large cat charities, fees for one cat are under £200: Cats Protection says £80 to £120 on average for an adult cat and £100 to £120 for a kitten, and Blue Cross fees start from £150 for cats aged 4 months to 7 years. An animal offered "free to a good home" is usually a private advert rather than a rescue. In England, cats must be microchipped before they are 20 weeks old, so ask to see the microchip details.

Are there Birman kittens for adoption in Buckinghamshire?

Not right now: no Birmans are listed in and around Buckinghamshire today, so there are no kittens either. Kittens do get listed, and rescues can tell you much more about an adult's character, so check back.
