Yes, more than short-haired cats. A long coat tangles and mats without regular brushing, ideally several times a week and daily during heavy moulting. Left alone, it mats down to the skin, which is uncomfortable and can hide problems. Most long-haired cats accept or even enjoy brushing once used to it, but it is a real commitment to plan for.

Some are, but most long-haired rescue cats are domestic longhairs, lovely fluffy moggies rather than a particular breed. Pedigree Maine Coons and Ragdolls do come into rescue, but breed guesses based on a fluffy coat are often wrong. Focus on the individual cat's temperament and the grooming commitment rather than the breed label.

Not here: we only list cats with rescues, so every long-haired cat listed here is adopted for the rescue's fee, which usually covers vet work already done. Whether to buy is your choice. Adopting means the rescue can tell you what it knows about the long-haired cat's history and health before you apply. If you decide to buy a pedigree kitten, Cats Protection suggests a breeder registered with a breed association such as the GCCF, and seeing the kitten with its mother at home rather than buying from a video or social media advert.
