What Chihuahuas are like to live with
The Royal Kennel Club calls the Chihuahua "the smallest breed in the world" and sums it up as a "huge personality in a tiny frame". It describes the breed as "bold and saucy in temperament" and "outgoing and confident". The breed takes its name from a Mexican state.
That is the breed in general. A rescue Chihuahua is an individual, and many are crosses. The rescue knows how this dog behaves at home, on the lead and with visitors, so ask them.
Size and exercise
The Royal Kennel Club lists the Chihuahua as needing up to 30 minutes of exercise a day. It says a flat can be big enough, with a small or medium garden, in town or country.
Grooming
There are two varieties, the smooth coat and the long coat, which The Royal Kennel Club says share the same physical attributes apart from coat type. The smooth coat is short and the long coat is medium length. Both shed and need grooming about once a week.
Health
The Royal Kennel Club asks Chihuahua breeders to have eyes tested and to have dogs' breathing graded for BOAS (brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome). It lists the lifespan as over 12 years.
A rescue dog's parents were rarely health tested, so ask the rescue what vet checks the dog has had and whether any condition is known. Your own vet is the right person to advise on anything you notice later.
