Cats are where Stoke is strongest. Cheadle & District Animal Welfare Society, a volunteer charity founded in 1968, fosters and boards its cats around Cheadle, about 7 miles east, and Betley Cat Rescue at Betley, about 10 miles west, takes in mostly stray and feral cats.
Further out, Ashbourne Animal Welfare at Ashbourne, about 17 miles, and Windyway Animal Rescue at Macclesfield, about 16 miles, list cats with us too, alongside smaller rescues near Crewe and Northwich. Each profile links to the rescue that cares for the cat, and you apply with them.
Ashbourne Animal Welfare asks £100 for an adult cat and £110 for a kitten under 6 months, or £180 and £190 for two together; a kitten too young to neuter comes with a voucher towards it. Windyway Animal Rescue asks £80 for a cat or vaccinated kitten, or £150 for a bonded pair.
Cheadle & District Animal Welfare Society asks adopters for a donation but publishes no amount, and Betley Cat Rescue publishes no fee, so ask them. Cats Protection's Stoke & Newcastle branch asks £85 for a cat and £105 for a kitten.
Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Cats Protection says you can expect to pay £80 to £120 on average for an adult cat and £100 to £120 for a kitten, varying between its branches, and Blue Cross fees start from £150 for cats aged 4 months to 7 years. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
Every cat rescue near Stoke works by appointment, so get in touch before you set off (Betley Cat Rescue says so on its homepage).
Cats Protection has a volunteer branch, Stoke & Newcastle, covering the city's ST postcodes and Congleton's CW12; you enquire through each cat's own listing. We don't list its cats, so search its own site.
The RSPCA Staffordshire North Branch stopped rehoming on 10 April 2025, its site says; it now helps owners on low incomes with vet bills, neutering and microchipping.
In England a pet cat must now be microchipped, so a vet's scan is the quickest way to find the owner. Ask neighbours too, since a cat you haven't seen before may simply be new to the street.
The council's stray service is for dogs: in England, section 149 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 deals with stray dogs, not cats.
Our guide to cat rescues in Stoke-on-Trent compares them side by side, and the rescue kittens guide covers kittens. The kittens page lists every kitten near Stoke today, with pages for older cats and bonded pairs too.

Yes. Betley Cat Rescue sees visitors by appointment only, and Cheadle & District Animal Welfare Society's cats live in foster homes and private catteries, so it always books visits.
Ask neighbours first, since the cat may just be new to the area, then ask a vet to scan it for a microchip: pet cats in England must now be chipped. The council's stray service is for dogs only.
Cheadle & District Animal Welfare Society has a phone line for cat enquiries and says it will always take back a cat it rehomed. Our Stoke-on-Trent rehoming page lists every local option.

No. LocalPetFinder is an independent UK website and is not connected with Petfinder. We bring together dogs, cats and rabbits from UK rescues and rehoming centres, and every profile links to the rescue that cares for the animal, so you apply with them directly.
Pets4Homes describes itself as the UK’s largest online pet marketplace, connecting buyers with breeders as well as shelters and charities. LocalPetFinder is for adoption: our listings come from rescues and rehoming centres and from owners rehoming their own pet, each checked by a reviewer before it goes live. We do not take adverts from breeders.
No. We do not list the RSPCA’s animals, at its national centres or its branches. To see them, use RSPCA Find a Pet, the RSPCA’s own search for animals in its centres and branches across England and Wales.
