Adopting a Maine Coon in Sheffield: rescues, costs and health
We found no Maine Coon rescue in Yorkshire, though people search for one, and the cat rescues around Sheffield rarely see the breed. What is left is a breed club noticeboard where owners rehome their own cats, and a pedigree rescue whose fosterers are more than an hour's drive away. Below: how each route works, what to check when you deal with the owner directly, what you pay compared with a breeder's kitten, and what to ask about the heart and hips.

The short answer
To adopt a Maine Coon near Sheffield, watch two pages: our Sheffield Maine Coon page, which picks up any Maine Coon or cross with the cat rescues we list within about 25 miles, and the Maine Coon Cat Club's older cats page, where owners post cats they need to rehome. Strawberry Persian and Pedigree Cat Rescue rehomes the breed too, from fosterers more than 60 miles away. Cats on these routes are mostly adults and few at a time, so check back often.
- Rescue adoption fees
- Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Cats Protection says you can expect to pay £80 to £120 on average for an adult cat and £100 to £120 for a kitten, varying between its branches, and Blue Cross fees start from £150 for cats aged 4 months to 7 years. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
- Buying a pedigree kitten
- Cats Protection says a registered pedigree can cost from £200 to well over £1,000, depending on the breed. We know of no reliable price for Maine Coons alone.
- The breed routes
- The club page gives no single fee, so ask the owner early. Strawberry Persian and Pedigree Cat Rescue sets each cat's fee itself, higher for younger, healthier cats, to pay for the old and ill ones.
- Cat rescues around Sheffield
- If a Maine Coon does reach one, published fees include £80 at Royston Animal Welfare, £110 for an adult at Barnsley Animal Rescue Charity and £175 at Chesterfield Animal Rescue.
- Running costs
- PDSA's 2024 figures put a cat at £79 a month or more, and at least £11,400 to £13,600 over its life, not counting the cat.

Where to adopt a Maine Coon near Sheffield and across Yorkshire
The live count at the top of the page covers any Maine Coon or Maine Coon cross listed by a rescue we work with within about 25 miles of Sheffield. It is usually zero: pedigree Maine Coons rarely pass through general cat rescues, and we found no Maine Coon rescue in Yorkshire. Big, shaggy domestic longhairs do come up, and they are on our Sheffield long-haired cats page. For the breed itself, both routes are outside South Yorkshire.
The Maine Coon Cat Club's older cats page
The club dates from 1985, the year after the first Maine Coons reached the UK, according to the GCCF. Its welfare page says it is a small hobby club, not a rehoming centre: owners who need to rehome a cat are posted there, it keeps no list of people waiting, and you are asked to check back regularly. On 21 October 2026 the page had one cat, on Merseyside, about 62 miles from Sheffield. With no rescue in between, protect yourself and the cat:
- See the cat at home with its owner before you agree anything, and ask about its health and habits.
- Pay nothing up front. No deposit for a cat you have only seen in photos.
- Check the microchip. In England, cats must be microchipped by 20 weeks old, so ask to see the record and have the keeper details moved into your name.
Strawberry Persian and Pedigree Cat Rescue
A volunteer pedigree rescue that works through fosterers rather than a centre. Its homepage lists Maine Coons among the breeds it helps, and its nearest fosterers to Sheffield are in the West Midlands and Worcestershire, more than 60 miles away. On 21 October 2026 its adoption page had no Maine Coon, and each listing gives the cat's own location. Its policy is strict: indoor homes unless a listing says otherwise, no children under 8, vet records for indoor cats you have kept or similar experience, and collection by car in a secure carrier.

Inside the city, the cat rescue we list is The Sheffield Cats Shelter on Travis Place. Cats Protection Sheffield & District's cats are on the Cats Protection website, not ours, and our guide to Sheffield cat rescues sets the rest side by side.
Why Maine Coons need new homes
Usually because of the owner, not the cat. The Maine Coon Cat Club gives examples such as an allergy in the family, emigration or a relationship ending, and says most of the cats on its page have no known medical or behavioural problem. A minority do, and some need a home with no children or other animals.
Adopting or buying a Maine Coon: what you pay
Ask what has already been done. A private owner should know the cat's history: whether it has been neutered, which jabs it has had, whose details are on the microchip and the date of its last vet visit. Strawberry's cats are neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and treated for fleas and worms before they go, with 5 weeks' free insurance (its homepage); after that, its adoption page requires cover for the rest of the cat's life.
A breeder's registered kitten costs £200 to well over £1,000 (Cats Protection); ask the breeder the same questions about jabs and vet checks. Once the cat is home, PDSA puts the running costs at £79 a month or more, however it arrived.
Maine Coon health: heart and hips
The GCCF names two inherited conditions in the breed. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) makes the heart muscle thicker, so less blood leaves the heart with each beat, and it can end in heart failure. Maine Coons can be DNA tested for it, and a breeding cat's heart can be checked by ultrasound. Hip dysplasia is harder: no simple gene test exists, so a breeding cat's hips can be X-rayed instead.
- Has it been screened? International Cat Care puts Maine Coons among the breeds at greater risk of HCM and says screening tests are available. Ask whether this cat has had one.
- Don't assume tests were done. Beyond the check its vet makes at vaccination, Strawberry's policy says it does not DNA test, scan or X-ray every cat.
- Joints and weight. PDSA also lists patellar luxation, where the kneecap slips out of place. Ask how the cat moves and whether it is a healthy weight.
A Maine Coon in a Sheffield home
Plan for size and energy. The GCCF calls the Maine Coon the largest domestic breed it recognises, slow to mature (up to four years) and high in energy, needing plenty of room to play. A sturdy climbing frame that takes its weight is worth the floor space. PDSA describes a talkative cat that loves company but prefers running about on the floor to curling up on a lap.
If you take a cat from an owner through the club, ask whether it has lived indoors or had a garden, and keep to what it knows at first. Strawberry places its cats indoors unless a listing says otherwise. Traffic is part of the decision in Sheffield as anywhere: The Sheffield Cats Shelter road-checks every address and, where the roads fail, considers the home for an indoor-only cat instead.
If you've been searching "Maine Coon kittens for sale Sheffield"
Rehoming is not a shop. A rescue picks the right home for each cat, and the fee you pay if it picks you goes towards the cat's care. Kittens hardly ever come up: the Maine Coon Cat Club says a kitten needing a new home is very rare. Anything listed near Sheffield today is on our Sheffield Maine Coon page.
If you decide to buy, look for a breeder registered with a body such as the GCCF and meet the kitten with its mother at home; Cats Protection warns against buying from a video or a social media advert. Ask to see the parents' HCM test results. If an advert looks like a scam, tell Report Fraud (formerly Action Fraud).
The law in England
Microchipping cats
In England, cats must be microchipped before they are 20 weeks old and registered on a database, a rule in force since 10 June 2024. An owner found without one has 21 days to comply or may be fined up to £500. Free-living cats (farm, feral and community cats) are exempt.
Lucy's Law: buying a kitten
In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that kittens under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
Questions
Tap a question to expand
Is there a Maine Coon rescue that covers Sheffield or Yorkshire?
None that we found, despite the searches for one. The nearest routes are the Maine Coon Cat Club's older cats page, a club noticeboard of owners' cats rather than a rescue, and Strawberry Persian and Pedigree Cat Rescue, whose nearest fosterers are more than 60 miles away. Our Sheffield Maine Coon page shows any that local rescues list, but most days it is empty.
Is it cheaper to adopt a Maine Coon than to buy a kitten?
Usually. Cats Protection puts a registered pedigree kitten at £200 to well over £1,000, while Royston Animal Welfare, Barnsley Animal Rescue Charity and Chesterfield Animal Rescue ask £80 to £175 for a cat. Strawberry sets its fee cat by cat, and each of its cats goes home neutered, vaccinated and microchipped with 5 weeks' free insurance.
Can I get a Maine Coon for free, or for £80 or less, near Sheffield?
Only by luck. £80 is Royston Animal Welfare's fee for a cat, but a Maine Coon there is rare. If an owner on the club page offers a cat cheaply or for nothing, still meet it at home and check the microchip before any money changes hands.
Should I adopt a Maine Coon kitten, an adult or an older cat?
Almost certainly an adult or an older cat. By the Maine Coon Cat Club's own account, kittens in need of a new home are very rare and many of its cats tend to be older. With a grown cat, the owner can describe its character and say whether it must be the only pet.
Why do Maine Coons end up in rescue?
Usually it is the owner's circumstances that change. The Maine Coon Cat Club gives an allergy in the household, a move abroad and a break-up as examples, and says that, as far as is known, most of the cats on its page have no health or behaviour problems.
What health problems should I ask about with a rescue Maine Coon?
The heart and the hips. The GCCF names HCM and hip dysplasia as the breed's two inherited conditions, International Cat Care puts Maine Coons at greater risk of HCM, and PDSA adds slipping kneecaps. Ask for the vet history in writing and insure the cat from day one.
How long do Maine Coon cats live?
The GCCF's health notes give 10 to 15 years. A Royal Veterinary College VetCompass study of UK vet records put a Maine Coon's life expectancy at birth lower, at 9.71 years.
Is an older Maine Coon a good choice for a smaller Sheffield home?
It can be, if a large cat has room to climb and play. The GCCF stresses play space for the breed, and an owner can tell you how an older cat copes indoors. Strawberry rehomes its cats to indoor homes unless a listing says otherwise.
