Adopting a cat in Peterborough
More people search for a rescue cat around Peterborough than for a dog, but the cat rescues we can list are small. Before this update we showed no cats here at all; four rescues now add theirs, and on 6 November 2026 their own pages held about 30 cats between them, most of Peterborough Cat Rescue's already with a viewing booked. Expect a short list, and expect good cats to go fast.
Peterborough Cat Rescue is the city's own: a volunteer charity with no centre, whose cats live in foster homes around Peterborough. Three Counties Dog Rescue keeps cats at its Bourne cattery, about 15 miles north, Lincs Ark fosters cats around Holbeach, Spalding and Boston, and Ravenswood Pet Rescue near Wisbech had three kittens that day.
What adopting a cat costs near Peterborough
Peterborough Cat Rescue asks a minimum donation of £100 a cat and Three Counties Dog Rescue a minimum of £100. Lincs Ark asks at least £110 for a cat or kitten, and Ravenswood Pet Rescue charged £70 for each of its kittens on 6 November 2026.
Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Cats Protection says you can expect to pay £80 to £120 on average for an adult cat and £100 to £120 for a kitten, varying between its branches, and Blue Cross fees start from £150 for cats aged 4 months to 7 years. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
How cat rescues near Peterborough work
Each of the four has its own order of steps; here is how they compare:
- Peterborough Cat Rescue: apply, then meet. You send the form on the cat's profile first; if it is accepted, a homing volunteer calls and arranges for you to meet the cat at its foster carer's home, where you pay the donation in cash. Unless a cat is listed as indoor-only, it needs safe outdoor access, and renters need the landlord's written permission.
- Lincs Ark: a chat and a home visit. Its adoption page says a home visit, usually by video, follows the first chat. It won't place a cat as indoor-only, or near a busy road.
- Three Counties: by appointment. Cats go through the same steps as its dogs: a visit by appointment, a home check and a trial before you pay.
Woodgreen, the RSPCA and Cats Protection
Three charities near Peterborough rehome cats that we don't list. Woodgreen Pets Charity has a cat centre at its Godmanchester rehoming centre, about 18 miles south, the RSPCA Block Fen Animal Centre rehomes cats in the Fens, and Cats Protection has a Peterborough & District branch run by volunteers. Search their sites too, starting from Cats Protection's own.

The law in England
- Microchipping cats. In England, cats must be microchipped before they are 20 weeks old and registered on a database, a rule in force since 10 June 2024. An owner found without one has 21 days to comply or may be fined up to £500. Free-living cats (farm, feral and community cats) are exempt.
- Lucy's Law: buying a kitten. In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that kittens under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
Peterborough cat adoption FAQ
Tap a question to expand
Is there a cat rescue in Peterborough?
Yes. Peterborough Cat Rescue is a volunteer charity in the city, with its cats in foster homes rather than a centre. Its cats join our pages with this update, alongside those of Three Counties Dog Rescue at Bourne, Lincs Ark and Ravenswood Pet Rescue.
How much does it cost to adopt a cat near Peterborough?
Peterborough Cat Rescue asks a minimum donation of £100 a cat, Three Counties Dog Rescue a minimum of £100 and Lincs Ark at least £110. Ravenswood Pet Rescue charged £70 for each of its kittens on 6 November 2026.
Why are there so few rescue cats listed near Peterborough?
Because the biggest cat rehoming charities near the city, Woodgreen at Godmanchester, the RSPCA Block Fen Animal Centre and Cats Protection, don't list their cats with us. Search their own sites as well as ours.
Can I adopt an indoor cat near Peterborough?
Only if the cat is listed as indoor-only. Peterborough Cat Rescue requires safe outdoor access for every other cat, and Lincs Ark doesn't rehome cats to live indoors only.
How do I meet a Peterborough Cat Rescue cat?
At its foster home. You apply on the cat's page; if your application is successful, its homing team talks through the match and arranges for you to meet the cat with its foster carer.
How do I rehome my cat in Peterborough?
Peterborough Cat Rescue was full, with its waiting list closed, on 6 November 2026. Our Peterborough rehoming page covers the other options.
LocalPetFinder and other pet sites
Tap a question to expand
Is LocalPetFinder the same as Petfinder?
No. LocalPetFinder is an independent UK website and is not connected with Petfinder. We bring together dogs, cats and rabbits from UK rescues and rehoming centres, and every profile links to the rescue that cares for the animal, so you apply with them directly.
How is LocalPetFinder different from Pets4Homes?
Pets4Homes describes itself as the UK’s largest online pet marketplace, connecting buyers with breeders as well as shelters and charities. LocalPetFinder is for adoption: our listings come from rescues and rehoming centres and from owners rehoming their own pet, each checked by a reviewer before it goes live. We do not take adverts from breeders.
Can I find RSPCA animals on LocalPetFinder?
No. We do not list the RSPCA’s animals, at its national centres or its branches. To see them, use RSPCA Find a Pet, the RSPCA’s own search for animals in its centres and branches across England and Wales.
