Adopting a Shih Tzu in Leeds: rescues, costs and health

Shih Tzus are rarely listed with the rescues we cover around Leeds, and we found no active Shih Tzu breed rescue to recommend. Here is where a rescue Shih Tzu is most likely to turn up, how fees compare with buying, and the breathing, eye and coat questions to ask.

The short answer

To adopt a Shih Tzu in Leeds, check our Leeds Shih Tzu page, which lists any Shih Tzu or Shih Tzu cross with a rescue near the city, and Dogs Trust Leeds on its own site. We found no active Shih Tzu breed rescue to recommend. That page is often empty, so allow time or be ready to travel. Whichever route works, the money is an adoption donation or fee rather than a sale price.

Rescue adoption fees
Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
Rescues near Leeds
Adult dogs at Barnsley Animal Rescue Charity start at £250. Aireworth Dogs in Need asks £250 for a typical adult and £100 once a dog is past 10, but it rehomes only in its own area, which reaches just the Leeds edge.
Buying a puppy
Blue Cross gives £400 to £3,000 for buying a puppy, before food, insurance and vet bills. No source we trust prices Shih Tzus on their own, so we leave that out.
A lifetime with a small dog
For a small dog, PDSA estimates £415 to set up, at least £69 a month, and a lifetime minimum of £6,200 to £12,000 (calculated in 2024, insurance included, treatment for illness not).

Where to adopt a Shih Tzu in Leeds

Any Shih Tzu or Shih Tzu cross a rescue lists with us within about 25 miles of Leeds is added to the live count under the short answer. Expect it to be empty more often than not, and we found no active Shih Tzu breed rescue to recommend, so the rescues below and Dogs Trust Leeds are the places to look. Other small dogs near the city are on our Leeds small dogs page.

Rescues we list near Leeds

A Shih Tzu can turn up at any general rescue, and it would show in the live count. Aireworth Dogs in Need is foster-based around Keighley and asks you to send its home check questionnaire, with photos, before you choose a dog; it only rehomes in its own area, which reaches the Bradford and Leeds edge. Barnsley Animal Rescue Charity has a kennel and cattery south of the city, and Greenleaf Animal Rescue fosters dogs across the country from a Leeds office. Fees, areas and rules for each are laid out in our guide to Leeds dog rescues.

Dogs Trust Leeds on York Road rehomes dogs too and has its own fee; we don't list its dogs, so check its site.

What brings a Shih Tzu into rescue

We haven't found a current, verified UK source that sets out why Shih Tzus in particular are given up, so we won't guess. What the breed sources do show is how much a Shih Tzu asks of an owner: The Royal Kennel Club says the coat needs grooming every day, and PDSA says a Shih Tzu shouldn't be left alone for more than four hours a day. Ask the rescue what it knows about a dog's past home.

Adopting or buying a Shih Tzu: what you pay

Adult dogs at Barnsley Animal Rescue Charity start at £250, and Aireworth Dogs in Need asks £250 for a typical adult and £100 once a dog is past 10. A rescue's fee goes towards vet work such as neutering and vaccinations, so ask each one what its dog has already had.

A bought puppy should come microchipped already, since in England the breeder must chip it by 8 weeks, so the chip costs you nothing extra. Everything else, from neutering and boosters to any dental work, is added to a purchase price that Blue Cross sets at £400 to £3,000.

Shih Tzu health: breathing, eyes, teeth and kidneys

A rescue Shih Tzu rarely comes with health test results for its parents, so ask what the rescue's vet has found. UK sources highlight these:

  • Breathing. Dogs Trust describes Shih Tzus as brachycephalic, with short noses, flat faces or both, and PDSA lists them among the flat-faced breeds that BOAS (brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome) commonly affects. The Royal Kennel Club recognised breathing grading for the breed in August 2026 and says it will join its health standard from January 2027.
  • Eyes. Eye testing is The Royal Kennel Club's minimum for breeders. PDSA names dry eye, cataracts and retinal detachment among conditions the breed may develop.
  • Teeth and kidneys. PDSA also lists crowded or displaced teeth, from too little room in the mouth, and renal dysplasia, an inherited kidney condition that can cause failure at a young age.

Grooming a rescue Shih Tzu

Daily brushing is the baseline: The Royal Kennel Club says the coat needs grooming every day, and Dogs Trust adds that a professional groomer can clip it every 6 to 8 weeks. PDSA says most pet owners keep the coat clipped and that the fur around the mouth and nose needs trimming and cleaning, as trapped food can make the skin sore.

Find out from the rescue whether the dog tolerates a brush and a trim, and put a groomer in the budget straight away.

Homes, hours and children

Size of home is rarely the obstacle: on The Royal Kennel Club's breed profile a flat is enough, with no more than an hour's exercise daily. Tell each rescue honestly about your home and garden.

Time alone is the firmer rule. PDSA says a Shih Tzu shouldn't be left alone for more than four hours a day, and that Shih Tzus should always be supervised with children, so expect a rescue to ask about your working hours and your family.

If you've been searching "Shih Tzu puppies for sale Leeds"

Most people looking for a Shih Tzu near Leeds search for one for sale, but rescue dogs are adopted: you apply, the rescue matches, and you pay its fee or donation, the same for anything on our Leeds Shih Tzu page. Puppies reach rescue now and then, but most rescue Shih Tzus are adults.

If you buy, check whether the parents have been eye tested and breathing graded, as The Royal Kennel Club recommends, and see your vet first: Dogs Trust notes that some practices offer pre-purchase consultations. The Royal Kennel Club runs a "Find a puppy" service, and a scam advert can be reported to Report Fraud (formerly Action Fraud).

The law in England

Microchipping and change of keeper

In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.

Lucy's Law: buying a puppy

In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Banned dog types

In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.

XL Bully dogs

In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).

Questions

Tap a question to expand

Which Shih Tzu rescue takes adopters from Leeds?

Not a breed rescue we can recommend: we found no active Shih Tzu breed rescue to point you to. Any Shih Tzu that a rescue near Leeds lists with us appears on our Leeds Shih Tzu page, and Dogs Trust Leeds lists its own dogs on its site.

Does a rescue Shih Tzu cost less than buying a puppy?

Usually, yes. Adult dogs at Barnsley Animal Rescue Charity start at £250, and Aireworth Dogs in Need asks £250 for a typical adult. Buying a puppy costs £400 to £3,000 by Blue Cross's figures.

Can I get a Shih Tzu for free, or for £100 or less, near Leeds?

No rescue gives a Shih Tzu away, but an older dog can come in at £100: Aireworth Dogs in Need charges £100 for a dog over 10 if you live in its area. Treat a "free to good home" Shih Tzu as a private sale with nobody vetting it: see the dog at home and ask to see its microchip details.

Is a Shih Tzu puppy or an adult the better choice?

For most homes, an adult. Puppies reach rescue only now and then, and an adult's coat, health and temperament can be seen before you commit.

Why do so many Shih Tzus need rehoming?

We haven't found a verified UK source that sets out why Shih Tzus in particular are given up, so we won't guess. What the breed sources do show is the commitment: The Royal Kennel Club says the coat needs grooming every day, and PDSA says a Shih Tzu shouldn't be left alone for more than four hours a day.

Which health problems should I raise with a Shih Tzu rescue?

Breathing first, then eyes, teeth and kidneys. Dogs Trust calls the breed brachycephalic, and PDSA lists Shih Tzus among the breeds BOAS commonly affects. PDSA also names dry eye, cataracts, crowded teeth and an inherited kidney condition. The rescue's vet notes are the place to start.

Would an older Shih Tzu suit me?

Often, yes. Shih Tzus live a fair while, with a VetCompass life expectancy at age 0 of 11.05 years. Aireworth Dogs in Need asks £100 once a dog is past 10, if you live in its area.

Do young children or a full-time job rule out a rescue Shih Tzu?

Not always, but both count. PDSA says a Shih Tzu shouldn't be left alone for more than four hours a day, so long working days count against you, and that a Shih Tzu should always be supervised around children. Each rescue decides dog by dog, so ask before you apply.
