Adopting a cat in Dumfries and Galloway

We list no cats around Dumfries yet: the three rescues we list here rehome dogs only. Cats Protection, whose cats we don't list, is on the council's licence list for the region. This page fills automatically if a cat rescue nearby starts listing with us.

Where to look for a cat instead

Cats Protection is the cat charity on the council's licence list for Dumfries and Galloway. Its cats aren't on LocalPetFinder, so look on its own website for cats in the region.

What adopting a cat costs

No cat rescue we list in the region publishes a fee for us to quote, so the figures below are national ones. Ask Cats Protection for its own fee before you visit.

Each rescue sets its own adoption fee, and Cats Protection says you can expect to pay £80 to £120 on average for an adult cat and £100 to £120 for a kitten, varying between its branches. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.

Before you bring a cat home

Scottish law does not require a cat to be chipped: gov.uk says owners in Scotland "can choose to microchip" their cat. A chip still gives a lost cat the best chance of getting home, so ask whether a rescue cat comes chipped.

If you already have a dog, or plan to adopt one of the dogs on our Dumfries and Galloway dog page, read the Glencaple centre's advice on dogs and cats: slow, supervised introductions with the dog on a lead, and a dog-free space for the cat.

The law in Scotland

  • Microchipping cats. In Scotland, microchipping a cat is a choice rather than a legal requirement: gov.uk says owners in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland "can choose to microchip" their cat. Compulsory cat microchipping applies in England only.
  • Lucy's Law: buying a kitten. In Scotland, Lucy's Law has banned the third-party sale of kittens under six months since 1 September 2021.
  • Rehoming licences. In Scotland, since 1 September 2021, anyone sourcing five or more animals in any 12-month period to rehome as pets needs a licence (Scottish Government). A licence is a useful sign that a Scottish rescue is what it says it is.

Can I adopt a rescue cat in Dumfries?

Not through LocalPetFinder yet: no rescue we list near Dumfries has cats. Cats Protection is the cat charity on the council's licence list for the region, so search its own site.

Why are there no cats on this page?

The rescues we list around Dumfries rehome dogs only. The page fills automatically if a cat rescue nearby starts listing with us.

Is there a cat rescue in Dumfries and Galloway?

Cats Protection is on the council's licence list for the region. We don't list Cats Protection's cats, so contact it directly.

Do cats have to be microchipped in Scotland?

No. Compulsory cat microchipping applies in England only; in Scotland it is your choice, though a chip is the quickest way to get a lost cat home.

Can a rescue dog from Dumfries live with my cat?

It depends on the dog: Dumfries and Galloway Canine Rescue Centre can assess a dog with cats but says it cannot guarantee any dog is cat-safe, and Dumfriesshire and Cumbria Greyhound Rescue thinks few of its ex-racers could share a home with a cat.

LocalPetFinder and other pet sites

Tap a question to expand

Is LocalPetFinder the same as Petfinder?

No. LocalPetFinder is an independent UK website and is not connected with Petfinder. We bring together dogs, cats and rabbits from UK rescues and rehoming centres, and every profile links to the rescue that cares for the animal, so you apply with them directly.

How is LocalPetFinder different from Pets4Homes?

Pets4Homes describes itself as the UK’s largest online pet marketplace, connecting buyers with breeders as well as shelters and charities. LocalPetFinder is for adoption: our listings come from rescues and rehoming centres and from owners rehoming their own pet, each checked by a reviewer before it goes live. We do not take adverts from breeders.

Can I find Scottish SPCA animals on LocalPetFinder?

No. We do not list the Scottish SPCA’s animals, at any of its rescue and rehoming centres. The Scottish SPCA, Scotland’s animal welfare charity, runs its own search: use Scottish SPCA Find a Pet to see the animals at its centres across Scotland. The RSPCA works in England and Wales, not Scotland.
