Dog rescues in Northampton and Northamptonshire, compared
Four more rescues now list their dogs on our Northampton pages: kennels at Grendon and Little Irchester, a foster network around the town and the National Animal Welfare Trust's centre at Aspley Guise. This guide sets out how each works, what each charges and asks of you, and which other charity in the county you should search separately.

How each rescue near Northampton works
Two have kennels near the Nene, one has no kennels at all, and one is a national charity's local centre.
Wellingborough Dog Welfare (Wellidog), Grendon
Wellidog calls itself a local charity in Grendon, and its kennels sit beside Grendon Lakes. It doesn't let visitors walk round the kennels, as that stresses the dogs, so you email about a dog you have seen online and it books an appointment if you look a good fit.
Once everyone is happy, a £50 non-refundable deposit reserves the dog while it arranges a home check, and it encourages you to spend time with the dog in kennels first. If more than one person wants a dog, it picks the home it thinks suits the dog best, and a dog that doesn't settle goes back to Wellidog.
Animals In Need Northamptonshire, Little Irchester
Set up in 1990, Animals In Need rescues wildlife as well as pets, and has worked with Northamptonshire Police on road accidents since 1999. Its sanctuary at Pine Tree Farm opens to the public from 12 to 3pm, Thursday to Sunday, but viewing a dog needs an appointment arranged by email, and applications aren't first come, first served.
Its dogs page asks a few questions first, then you meet the dog with photo ID and proof of address. It wants a full home check, a secure garden with fencing of at least 6 feet and any dog you have neutered, and it doesn't rehome to families with children under 5. Dogs marked "under assessment" can be applied for; processing just takes longer.
Midlands Dog Rescue, foster homes around Northampton
A family-run rescue, Midlands Dog Rescue was set up as a foster network, and says it does not kennel dogs. It takes dogs from council pounds after the statutory 7 days and has each one health checked by its vet before it goes to a fosterer. We found no charity registration for it.
Its process is an application with photo ID, a home check in person or by video, then a meet and greet. The dog comes with a crate, lead, harness, bedding, bowls and some food, and the rescue offers support for the dog's whole life.
NAWT Bedfordshire, Aspley Guise
Once HULA Animal Rescue, this National Animal Welfare Trust centre has been at Aspley Guise since the 1970s and serves Bedford, Milton Keynes and the villages around them. It opens 11am to 4pm, closed Tuesdays.
You register interest on a dog's page; NAWT contacts matched applicants in date order and can't answer everyone. A visit follows, sometimes more than one, before you sign the homing agreement.
Choosing a dog rescue from Northampton
Our Northampton dogs page shows who is waiting; weigh these points before you apply:
- Young children. Animals In Need doesn't rehome dogs to families with children under 5, and Pawprints Dog Rescue won't rehome to children under 9 unless the dog is known to be good with them.
- A garden. Animals In Need wants a secure garden with 6 foot fencing; Midlands Dog Rescue asks about your garden on its form.
- Meeting the dog. At Wellidog and Animals In Need you meet the dog in kennels; at Midlands Dog Rescue you meet it after the home check, at a supervised meet.
- Breeds. On 7 November 2026 Animals In Need had several greyhounds and Cocker Spaniels, and Midlands Dog Rescue had small terriers and crosses.
Dog rescue from Milton Keynes and Wellingborough
From Milton Keynes, NAWT Bedfordshire at Aspley Guise is the nearest, about 6 miles, and Wellidog about 13. Our Milton Keynes dogs page starts from there.
Wellingborough has Animals In Need on its edge at Little Irchester and Wellidog about 5 miles away; our Wellingborough dogs page measures from the town.
What happens to stray dogs in Northampton?
West Northamptonshire Council collects strays from 8am to 8pm every day, usually once the dog is safely shut in, and takes them to Appledown Kennels at Eaton Bray, near Dunstable, for the statutory 7 days. For 2025 to 2026 an owner pays a £140 collection fee, £11 administration and the £25 statutory fee, plus £25 a day for kennelling.
The RSPCA Northamptonshire Branch
The RSPCA Northamptonshire Branch, an independently run branch at Rushden, rehomes dogs that we don't list; you apply through each dog's profile on its own site. For a young dog, see our rescue puppies guide.
The law in England
Microchipping and change of keeper
In England, as everywhere in the UK, every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Since 6 April 2016 a dog in England can't pass to a new keeper until it is chipped, and the new keeper must update the database (the England regulations). A rescue chips before rehoming; after adoption, keep the details up to date.
Lucy's Law: buying a puppy
In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that puppies under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.
Banned dog types
In England, it is against the law to sell, abandon, give away or breed from a banned type: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully. Whether a dog is banned depends on what it looks like rather than its breed or name, so no rescue can rehome one and none appear on LocalPetFinder. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a banned type.
XL Bully dogs
In England, since 31 December 2023 it has been illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange or abandon an XL Bully or let it stray, and since 1 February 2024 illegal to own one without a Certificate of Exemption (gov.uk: England and Wales).
