Which Manchester cat rescue for which cat

The table is alphabetical. Grouped by where they are and how they work, the picture looks like this.

Close to the city

Society for Abandoned Animals is in Stretford, where visits are by appointment and you have a home visit or video call before an adoption is confirmed. Stopford Cat Rescue rehomes only in Stockport, Bramhall and South Manchester, and Heatons Cats is also in Stockport. Animals in Distress has its sanctuary at Irlam, Cheshire Cats Rescue has fosterers around Altrincham, and Independent Cat Rescue Prestwich fosters cats in Prestwich. StraySafe Rescue has fosterers across Greater Manchester and says "We do not rehome on a first-come, first-served basis".

Sanctuaries and shelters you can visit

Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary at Ramsbottom, Warrington Animal Welfare, Destitute Animals Shelter in Bolton, Pennine Pen Animal Rescue in Oldham, PawPurrs Halfway House in Hindley and Windyway Animal Rescue near Macclesfield all keep cats at their own sites. Visiting works differently at each: Destitute Animals Shelter's cattery is open to view on Monday, Friday and Saturday afternoons, and Windyway asks you to visit the sanctuary after your form and references.

Foster networks around Greater Manchester

To the north west, English Barn Cats Rescue fosters around Darwen and takes adopters within 15 miles, which includes Bolton and Bury, and Avid's Angels Cat Rescue and Saving Strays Animal Rescue are in Bolton. Cats Guidance Rescue is in Wigan and Kitten Karers in St Helens. To the south, Tails Animal Rescue and Willowsway Cat Rescue foster around Northwich.

Kittens

Kitten rules vary more than adult ones. Heatons Cats keeps kittens indoors until 10 months old, Avid's Angels Cat Rescue doesn't rehome kittens to families with children under 5, and Saving Strays Animal Rescue doesn't rehome kittens under 6 months to them. Our rescue kittens guide has each rescue's kitten rules, and the kittens page lists every kitten we have near Manchester today.

Busy roads and indoor cats: each rescue's rule

Many Manchester cat rescues won't rehome a cat that will go outside on or near a main road, and some won't rehome near one at all, even an indoor cat. If you live on a busy road, check the rule before you apply, and see the indoor cats page for cats whose rescue says they need an indoor home. This is what each rescue says on its own page:

RescueIts rule on roads and indoor homes
Saving Strays Animal RescueNo adoptions to families on main roads, "even if it is an indoor cat"
Independent Cat Rescue Prestwich"We will not rehome to anyone near/on a busy/main road"
Heatons CatsNot within 100m of a main road, railway or open water; kittens kept in until 10 months
Cheshire Cats RescueAt least 100 metres from busy roads and railways

How to choose a Manchester cat rescue

Start from your own home, because each rescue's rules decide who it can rehome to. These are the ones Manchester adopters run into most.

How adopting from a Manchester cat rescue works

The order varies, but most Manchester cat rescues follow the same steps. A "home check" is a short visit or video call to see that your home suits the cat. Heatons Cats says "Our visit is not intrusive".

  1. Find a cat on the rescue's site or ours, and read its profile for the home it needs: indoor or outdoor, children, other cats, dogs.
  2. Apply. Most rescues use a form. Not every rescue replies to every applicant: Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary contacts you only if it thinks you are a good match, and StraySafe Rescue doesn't rehome on a first come, first served basis.
  3. Talk to the rescue and meet the cat. Warrington Animal Welfare calls you, you meet the cat, and then you can reserve it.
  4. Have the home check. English Barn Cats Rescue visits in person, Avid's Angels Cat Rescue does it virtually, and Society for Abandoned Animals uses a home visit or a video call.
  5. Pay the fee and take your cat home. Some rescues bring the cat to you: English Barn Cats Rescue does. Cats Guidance Rescue prefers its fee paid by bank transfer before adoption, and several fees, such as Avid's Angels Cat Rescue's, are non-refundable.

Charities around Manchester you can contact directly

  • Cats Protection's Manchester branch takes enquiries through its North Manchester Cat Centre in Oldham, which is open by appointment only and charges £85 for an adult cat and £105 for a kitten up to 6 months. Its Trafford branch asks £75 for an adult cat and £95 for a kitten, and its Warrington Cat Centre £85 and £105. Stockport and Bolton & Radcliffe have their own branches.
  • Blue Cross rehomes cats from its Greater Manchester rehoming, advice and behaviour unit in Radcliffe.
  • The RSPCA also rehomes animals; its Manchester and Salford Branch rehomes cats and small animals, so search on its own site.

Found a stray cat in Manchester?

Take it to a vet or a cat rescue, who can scan it for a microchip. In England, the council stray service is set up for dogs: the law behind it, section 149 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, is headed "Seizure of stray dogs" and covers dogs, not cats. The RSPCA says it can't respond to calls about healthy stray cats, and in England a cat must now be microchipped (the law section below), so a scan is the quickest way to find its owner.

The law in England

Microchipping cats

In England, cats must be microchipped before they are 20 weeks old and registered on a database, a rule in force since 10 June 2024. An owner found without one has 21 days to comply or may be fined up to £500. Free-living cats (farm, feral and community cats) are exempt.

Lucy's Law: buying a kitten

In England, Lucy's Law has meant since 6 April 2020 that kittens under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop or dealer: you buy direct from the breeder or adopt from a rehoming centre.

Questions

Which is the best cat rescue near me in Manchester?

There isn't one best rescue: it depends on where you live and the cat you want. Close to the city, Society for Abandoned Animals is in Stretford and Stopford Cat Rescue covers Stockport, Bramhall and South Manchester. Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary at Ramsbottom and Warrington Animal Welfare keep cats at their own sites, and StraySafe Rescue has fosterers across Greater Manchester. The comparison table on this page sets out each rescue's area, process and fee.

How much does it cost to adopt a cat in Manchester, and what does the fee cover?

Usually £95 to £150 from a Manchester rescue. Society for Abandoned Animals asks £100 a cat, Warrington Animal Welfare £110 for an adult, Cheshire Cats Rescue normally £130, and Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary £150 for a cat or kitten. The fee usually covers vet work: StraySafe Rescue's cats, at £150, are vaccinated, chipped, neutered if old enough and come with five weeks' insurance.

Can I adopt a cat for free, or for £80 or less, in Manchester?

None of the rescues here publishes a free adoption, but £80 or less is possible. Windyway Animal Rescue near Macclesfield asks £80 for a cat or vaccinated kitten, and Cats Protection's Trafford branch £75 for an adult cat. The fee pays towards vet work: Pennine Pen Animal Rescue's £150 includes neutering, the first two vaccinations, flea and worm treatment and microchipping.

Should I adopt a kitten or an adult cat?

Either, but kittens come with more rules: Heatons Cats keeps them indoors until 10 months old, and Avid's Angels Cat Rescue doesn't rehome kittens to families with children under 5. An adult cat can be cheaper, such as £100 for a cat against £120 for a kitten at Society for Abandoned Animals.

Can I adopt an indoor-only cat, or a cat if I have children or other pets?

Sometimes, but Manchester rescues are strict. Some list cats that need an indoor home, but Pennine Pen Animal Rescue generally doesn't rehome cats as indoor pets, and Saving Strays Animal Rescue won't rehome on a main road even for an indoor cat. Warrington Animal Welfare, Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary and Heatons Cats don't rehome to families with children under 5, and Heatons Cats won't rehome to homes with dogs.

Why adopt a rescue cat rather than buy one?

Because the cat needs a home, and the fee is lower and covers vet work. Manchester rescues mostly ask £95 to £150, while Cats Protection says a registered pedigree costs from £200 to well over £1,000. In England, Lucy's Law means a kitten under six months can't be sold by a third party such as a pet shop, but rescues and rehoming centres can still rehome them.

Are older cats a good choice to adopt in Manchester?

Often, yes, and some charities charge less: Blue Cross fees start from £100 for cats aged 8 or over, against £150 for cats aged 4 months to 7 years. Our older cats page lists every older cat with the Manchester rescues we list today.

What happens at a home check with a Manchester cat rescue?

Someone from the rescue checks that your home suits the cat, in person or by video. English Barn Cats Rescue visits in person, Avid's Angels Cat Rescue does a virtual home check, and Society for Abandoned Animals uses a home visit or video call before confirming. Society for Abandoned Animals asks about busy roads, pets and children.

Why aren't Cats Protection or Blue Cross cats on LocalPetFinder?

We don't list cats from Cats Protection, Blue Cross or the RSPCA, so search their own sites. Cats Protection's North Manchester Cat Centre in Oldham handles Manchester enquiries, and Blue Cross rehomes cats from Radcliffe. The rescues in our table are the ones whose cats you can browse here.
