What poodles and doodles are like to live with

The Royal Kennel Club describes the Poodle as a "glamorous, intelligent breed descended from European duck hunters". It says the breed was developed in Germany as a water retriever, and that the famous trim was practical, not just for show.

Size and exercise
The Royal Kennel Club lists all three Poodle sizes as needing up to an hour of exercise a day, in town or country. The home it suggests differs by size. The Standard suits a large house with a large garden, the Miniature a small house with a small or medium garden, and the Toy a flat with a small or medium garden.
Grooming
The Royal Kennel Club lists all three sizes as having a medium-length coat that does not shed, but that needs grooming every day.
Health
The Royal Kennel Club asks breeders of all three sizes to have hips scored and eyes tested. It also asks Standard Poodle breeders to DNA test for von Willebrand disease (vWD1), and Toy Poodle breeders to DNA test for progressive retinal atrophy (prcd-PRA). It lists the lifespan of each size as over 12 years.
A rescue dog's parents were rarely health tested, so ask the rescue what vet checks the dog has had and whether any condition is known. Your own vet is the right person to advise on anything you notice later.
