What lurchers are like to live with
A lurcher is a type, not a breed. Dogs Trust describes it as a sighthound, such as a Greyhound, Whippet or Saluki, crossed with another breed such as a Collie or Terrier. Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home says the same: lurchers "are not actually a recognised breed".

Size and exercise
Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home says lurchers generally need moderate amounts of exercise and tend to prefer short bursts. It also notes they can have a high prey drive, which means they need plenty of exercise and stimulation. Ask the rescue whether this dog has good recall off the lead.
Grooming
Dogs Trust says lurchers generally only need a weekly brush. A rough-coated lurcher may need more, so ask the rescue.
Health
As a cross, a lurcher has no breed health scheme of its own. Ask the rescue what vet checks the dog has had and whether any condition is known, and let your own vet advise after that.
Children, cats and other dogs
Sighthound crosses often like to chase. How much does it cost to adopt a lurcher in Scotland?
Each rescue sets its own adoption fee. Battersea charges £230 for a dog over six months and £275 for a puppy under six months, Dogs Trust charges £300 for a puppy or adult dog in England, Wales and Scotland, and Blue Cross fees start from £235 for dogs aged 8 or over and £335 for dogs aged 1 to 7. The fee usually covers neutering, microchipping and first vaccinations, and each rescue confirms its own fee.
