Gail

I need a calm and quiet, adult only home where I can settle in at my own pace. I could live with another calm dog, or be the only dog. I haven’t met cats I will need a secure garden while I get used to my new home. I am learning to walk on a lead and harness, and doing well with those I trust. I have never lived in a home so I will need help to learn house training. I will be spayed before going to my forever home! Gail has come to us from a breeder and is now looking for her forever home. She was a very scared little girl who found herself extremely overwhelmed when she first arrived, and it was clear she was not used to much handling or human interaction. At the beginning, Gail was very wary of people and would do her best to avoid being handled, often using warning signals to ask for space. If she felt pushed beyond her comfort zone, she could panic and make poor decisions through fear. With time, patience and consistency from the staff she knows and trusts, Gail has made lovely progress and is beginning to show her softer, happier side. Although still a nervous girl, Gail is progressing well with the staff she has built relationships with and now enjoys attention from the people she knows well. She will happily roll over for a tummy rub, which is a lovely sign of the trust she has developed, although she can still be a little unsure if she feels there is too much fuss or interaction. Her adopters will need to continue reading her body language and allow her to choose when she is ready for affection. Gail is a happy little girl with plenty of character and a lovely playful side. She particularly enjoys carrying her favourite toys around, and these little glimpses of her personality are wonderful to see as her confidence continues to grow. Gail spent some time recovering from a back injury, but she is now showing no signs of pain and is back to her normal self. She happily trots around as though nothing was ever wrong and has recovered brilliantly. We have also learnt a little more about Gail's feelings towards other dogs. Although she can find some dogs overwhelming, she has shown that she can cope well with a calm canine companion. She is currently sharing her kennel with a Cavalier and has even been spotted happily snuggled up in the same bed with her. This has been a lovely development and suggests that, with the right match, Gail may be able to live with another calm and respectful dog. Gail's walking has also come on wonderfully. She is much more confident on her walks now, although she is most comfortable walking with the staff members she knows and trusts well. Her adopters will need to understand that she may need time to build the same confidence with them and should continue her training gently and at her own pace. Gail will be looking for a calm and quiet, adult-only home with adopters who have experience of scared ex-breeding dogs and understand the importance of patience, time and reading her body language. She will need kind, understanding adopters who will allow her to take everything at a pace she feels comfortable with and continue building her confidence without putting her under pressure. She has never lived in a home before, so everything will be new to her. She will need to learn all about home life, including house training and settling into a daily routine. Her adopters should be prepared for this to be a gradual process and give her plenty of time to feel safe and secure. As Gail has had previous back issues, we have used a supportive back brace harness to help protect her while she builds her confidence on walks. This is something her adopters may wish to continue using in the future for extra support. Gail is a very special little girl who has already come such a long way. She is still learning to trust and can be unsure at times, but beneath her worries is a happy, funny little dog who loves her toys and enjoys the company of those she knows. With the right people, plenty of patience and a gentle approach, we believe Gail will continue to blossom into a wonderfully rewarding companion.
